Correct, the original 12 gauge frames from 1950 were actually built on the same frame as the 16 gauge 11-48. This is why the original 870s were lighter than most other 12 gauges of the time.

Dunno 870, but in general older guns had thinner barrels. Later guns have thicker barrels to allow for choke tubes.

| The biggest differences in these old guns and the newer ones are in the barrels. The old ones are much thinner and that's where the weight is. |
