First 16ga finally arrived Saturday. It looked better in person than it did on the auction site.
Looks like the start of a small crack-
Is this normal wear for a shotgun made in 1955?

Thanks. I feel a bit better about this now. This one was a Christmas present to myself.
It works fine.
If you say do not dry fire it, how do you store it without it being cocked? It cocks when the breach is closed.
I had wondered if those holes could not be drilled out and have a bushing threaded into the breach face by gunsmith familiar with this problem. |

Yes the holes can be repaired in several ways
Leave the springs cocked,
or if you HAVE to let them down,
use snap caps or
spent FIRED, EMPTY, used up Hulls
Did I mention the hulls are EMPTY
Still a nice looking gun
16 gauge after all
Where do you hail from and I will try to locate a good smith to
review the concern

Another way to let the hammers down, without causing any damage, is to break open the barrels. With the barrels all the way open; hold the barrels, apply pressure to "both" triggers. Maintain the pressure on the triggers. Slowly close the barrels while holding both triggers. The hammers will not be engaged on the sears. The hammers are now down, and the hammer springs now are relaxed. Good luck |

My guess is that the firing pins were replaced with the wrong size and Bubba decided to drill out the face instead of getting the right ones.
On top of that he used a very dull drill bit. |

Thanks guys. I like the gun, finding this was a real downer but if it can be repaired I am all for it.
Mike,
I live in Mississippi. Shipping is not a problem so it does not have to be someone close. |

RAA, Like the other guys, I think this is fixable. The rest of the gun looks to be in good shape, so don't beat yourself up too badly. The seller was very underhanded not to tell you about this in the first place, or at least have pics up that you could see it and be forewarned.
HOWEVER, having said that, lets see if we can find you a good gunsmith to help you fix it. Where are you in Mississippi? I live in Jackson and if I have something like this I take it to Swann's over on Old Canton, just up from Canton Mart Road, right across from Briarwood Wine and Spirits. However, if you are in North MS or the Coast, I am sure there are some reputable smiths in those areas.
Anyway, good luck and keep us posted.

KB,
Thanks. I am in the north end of the state. Emailed five gunsmiths this morning in various parts of the US, waiting on answers.
Do you have an email address or website for Swann's?
To the seller's credit, he offered to pay for the repairs if I did not want to return the shotgun.
