Hi all;
I have found several Lyman loads for 700-x powder for 1 oz loads...between 13 -15 grns.... can this be throttled back for 7/8 oz loads? seems to shoot clean unlike hodgdons universal clays which seems to be to slow a powder (lots of unburned flakes & dirty bbls)..... thanks in advance tgun25

I've been using 16-16.5 grains of Green Dot for my 7/8 ounce loads. They function very well and pressures are moderate and recoil is mild too. I think loads based on 700X might be on the hot side pressure wise. They are fine in modern 16 ga. guns. However, I would not use 700X for pre-WWII guns.

I agree with 16ga guy 700x carries to high of pressures. I like 8oox which has lower pressures with 16gr. Make sure you seat the wad on the powder where the pressure gauge moves just a little. If you don't it will not burn clean. Also one of my favorite loads is with International clays with 15.5gr. recoil is very moderate and very clean burning.

I have asked several questions since purchasing my 16 double and everyone has been very helpful ... Thanks again

PS Looks like Green Dot is the powder of choice for 7/8 oz in the 16.....! Very Happy

Unique and Solo 1250 work well also, and generally give lower pressure than Green Dot.

I too prefer Solo 1250 and Unique to Greendot. But all will work well in modern guns. Russ

In the 3/4 and 7/8 ounce loads, Green Dot burns a little cleaner and is a bit more efficient. It acts pretty much the same as Red Dot does in 7/8 and 1 ounce 12 ga loads. In fact, you can easily use 14.5 grains of Red Dot in the 3/4 ounce 16 ga load for moderns guns designed for 9500 PSI loads and up. It might provide a bit more pattern spread too for close work on quail and even grouse. However, it requires a bit more filler to get a good crimp. I just happen to use the Green Dot because it works very well for both these weight loads and I can use just two 1/8 inch thick 28 ga. card wads for filler in the 3/4 ounce load. Red Dot loads need three.

However, International Clays will work about like Green Dot and will be about as clean. Unique, 1250, and, Universal will work too, but will leave more residue. But, that is not so critical in a hinge gun or pump as it is in an auto.

Thanks Guys;
I ran some 7/8 oz loads through using 15.4 unique w /sp16 and 2filler wads, w209 ....load has light recoil...crimps are good...but man is this load dirty...lots of unburned powder and residue....! I'm shooting a post wwII spanish double.. can I move up to a 16.5 green dot load w/ psi of 10,200 - 10,300...?

I think the pressure will be well below that. 16.5 grains of Green Dot can be loaded into a 1 ounce load in a Remington case with an R16 wad and not hit that high a pressure. so 7/8 ounce will be under that mark easily. I've shot a bunch of these 7/8 ounce Green Dot loads out of my 1959 AyA Matador without a hicccup. I'd venture to say you'll be fine if the gun is sound.

The 16ga reloading forum list a 7/8oz load using 16.5grs of GreenDot that generates less than 7500 psi (my MEC actually drops 16.3grs according to the electronic scales). I use this load in my 1929 English double and Husky hammer guns. No recoil and clean burning.

There have been some very lively discussions about the 7/8oz. Green Dot load on this forum this past year or so. I also feel that this should be a good, safe load for modern firearms so I sent some test loads to Tom Armbrust last Friday. The load recipe is; Rem SP/GL black case, CCI 209, 16.5gr. Green Dot, R16 Rem wad w/ 1-.135" nitro card wad under shot, 7/8oz shot. All powder and shot charges were weighed. Also sent in a 15gr. load for a possible low pressure/low velocity load and a 16gr. load in the Win CF case with everything else the same.

I have chronographed these loads and found 16.5gr. to average 1220 fps and 16gr. at 1180 fps. I use the Rem GL for a control load when setting up my chronograph so I know they are close. They average around 1210 which is about what Tom's testing also found. By the way, the Rem Game Loads have VERY consitant shot to shot velocities. The Green Dot 7/8oz. loads are almost as good.

Bronco,
I also average 16.3gr with a #28 bushing so the 16.5gr test load should cover us even if we get a little heavy handed with the press now and then.
The 16.5gr load in the spread sheet you mentioned, is it the one in a Fiocchi case? If so the Rem case should develop more pressure since it has a smaller internal volume. The Win CF case should be even higher which is why I backed off a half grain.

Hopefully we will have the results in a week or two so we can put this baby to bed. I will post them as soon as they come in.

Dennis
