I loaded this Cheddite 2 3/4" load in a RST 2 1/2" and it fit like it was made for a 2 1/2" shell. The only thing different is I dropped the Longshot to 20.0 instead of 20.6. If I had loaded it in a Cheddite 2 3/4", I would have had to use a filler to get a good crimp.
The Hodgdon recipe for this 2 3/4" load gave 8400 psi and 1250 fps.
Your thoughts; see any problems?

I use about 5-6 more grains than that in a short hull, but roll crimp.
I would like to see that load actually tested. I am skeptical that 20.0 is producing 1250fps with 1 oz. |

Where did you find that load? Hodgdons only lists universal for the Cheddite 2 3/4" hull. The only loads they list using Longshot is in the win polyformed hull. Those loads all call for 25 to 30 grains of powder. |

Good catch SPR
I got that off the Rem hulls page. I think I know what I did. I was looking at Rem hulls and went back and chose Cheddite but didn't click on get data, hence scrolled down on the Rem page.

Wrong hull and wrong primer. I saw that also. have you tried any of them? Could be a pretty weak load. I would go with the 11/8oz load for the polyformed hull using 22.5 grains and just load 1oz. Win primer. SG-16 wad.
Most of the Longshot loads are way above that. Even when they are up to 25 grains thay are still low pressure. May not burn to clean. Both Hooch and Bowbuilder have tested loads using Longshot and they are way above that in grains for the powder. Actually I wouldn't go below 25 grains of powder. Will give you a lot mor fps but the pressure would be up where it burns cleaner. Unique or Universal would work better for you. |
