I ususlly hunt with classic American SxS's in 12 gauge, but yesterday was an exception.
I hunted pheasants in Illinois with the 59 year-old Mossberg 16 gauge bolt action shotgun that my Dad gave me on my 13th birthday & Bar-Mitzvah. It has been semi-retired for many years, but i make it a point to take it hunting at least once every fall. Its the only 16 gauge that I own.
Yesterday we hunted pheasants at Carlyle Lake, IL (near St. Louis), where non-toxic shot is mandatory. I used Federal steel 4's with the adjustable choke set on Improved Cylinder. The dogs did their jobs well, and our group had 11 points. The old Mossberg brought down my two birds (the limit).
It was particularly pleasant to hunt with this "Old Friend."

Is it a Model 190?
I hunted rabbits a few times with my uncle's 20 ga. bolt action shotgun when I was a teenager living on the farm in Illinois (I think it was a Sears JC Higgins). I watched Nick Hammack kill several pheasants with his 16 ga. Model 190 at Standing Rock a few years ago.
I saw a 16 ga. Model 190 at a local gun store a couple of years ago. Remembering the fun Nick had with his, I decided to buy it. After some "negotiation" on the price, I was able to get it for $86 out the door. I've shot some clays with mine, but haven't hunted with it yet. I think it's a neat gun. |

I have a friend who swears by his Mossie 500 16 ga pump. He also has the .410 model and crushes skeet targets with it. Not bolts, but so what. Mossies have killed a train load of birds over the seasons. |

You know I have a very nice Mossberg 500 in 16 bore. Original straight grained walnut, red Mossberg pad and recently I had a Poly Choke installed on the former 28" FULL choke barrel. (now 25") It is getting to be one of my favourite 16 bores. Oh ya it only has one action bar. Nice pics and good to see a working gun out doing it's thing.

The Mossberg 190 was my second 16 gauge shotgun. The first was a hardware store brand single-shot ("London Bridge Prince") that would pop open when shot with a heavy duck load. I thought that was a cool feature and showed my dad. He took it away and got a 190 at some farm auction (for $11!) that he gave me. I still have that gun and take it out for squirrels in the fall.

Like Barkey said , Nick's back up gun = he almost always has is his 190 . I've got one , but far down the line in the user lottery ..... Got a 410 mossy - shoots great but defies gunsmiths fixing it . Wants to bend the extractor and unlocks when shooting doubles . |

The ole guns have balance and pointability a bit heavy but for a hundred dollars it beats many a shotgun costing a grand or more.

Still have my 500B 16 ga. pump with C-Lect Choke my Dad gave me when I was 14. That was 1962! I don't use it much any more and I'll never part with it either. It has taken it's share of pheasants and rabbits in Western PA where I grew up. |
