Hootch,
Coulda sworn this is the low pressure reloading group.... Any at any rate, the gun is in fine condition. As I stated, I am new to reloading and trying to replicate some fine, low recoil loads a friend gave me. I have tried modern commercial loads like the low dram eq (2 1/2) remington 1 oz. loads in the gun and they do kick more than the reloads I mentioned. Realize there are several factors that play into recoil but given the remington loads are relatively light modern loads (both quantity of shot and powder) then there must be some other factor that contributes to the difference. Again, I am a novice but I am under the distinct impression that older guns (mine included) were designed around the lower pressure ammunition available at the time. |

Hello all My name is Wayne I found this page after rifling thru alot of information on line and after buying a press (A Lee load-all II) I was given my grand fathers J.C. Higgens 16ga tube fed bolt action shotgun... Since owning it I find rounds hard to come by in my area so I've decided to reload. Could sombody point me towards a good book of loading data or a 16ga fo "Dummies" book. I've read everything online from loading single large musket balls to using 12ga charts because "they're close enough". I just really want a good start from a proven source of safe information.[/img] |

Thanks entirely to skeetx showing me spr310 I have had excellent success reloading my 16ga. Now here is a new question. I found one old buckshot load in a box my grandfather gave me and one really old what he called a pumpkin ball (a round lead ball) now I don't know if I'll ever have any intrest in loading a ball load... But the buck shot is intriguing me. I don't want to fire either of these. But some #1 buck could be nice. I have dove into alot of research and there seems to be alot of speculation but I read a few post saying to use a shot cup like a waa16.... Somthing about the safety of the barrel. Also I came across solid brass hulls.... What are they for. I have seen no data on them and refuse to load from a non teputable source. I have ordered a book and between it and spr310's loads should be able to come up with somthing. Any recommendations? |

New here, and after reading some posts, I found someone else asking this, with no reply..... What is the threshold between low and high pressure, for our purposes here?

Someone of professional stature will have to provide a definition as to what the separation of low pressure (LUP) and high pressure (LUP) is. A good starting point, in the absence of literature addressing the question, is the spr310 posting on this website. As always, one is responsible for one's own decisions in using advice proffered.
Looking for low pressure loads in some old Lyman manuals, the range of 16 gauge low pressure reloads start at 7,300 (pg 127 - Lyman Shotshell Handbook 1st Edition 1969) One of the recipes is 20 gr of 7625 powder, Remington 69 primer, Rem H wad and two Rem 5/16 felt wads. 7,300 LUP @ 1170 fps.
High pressure of 10,500 LUP is reached in a Rem SP Express hulll with 1 oz shot, 14.5 gr Hi-Skor 700X powder, Win 209 primer and SP-16 wad with a 28 gauge .125 card under the shot. (Lyman Shotshell Handbook, 3rd Edition, 1984 pg 197).
When I look for a lo pressure recipe FOR MY OLD SxS GUNS I look at the spr310 recipes in addition to other printed recipes, and proceed along those lines. |

Hi, I am new to this group and am already enjoying all the great information. I have always been a 16 gauge guy. I tend to be drawn to the more obscure things. I have 3 model 12s in 16, a Browning Citori, a Model 97, and an Ithica Grade 111 NID. I love my 16s.
I am just now starting to reload and would love any advice or information I can get. I am looking at getting a P/W 375. So am still looking to figure out my powder and hulls. I want to shoot 1oz. loads and try to keep the pressure under 9000. Right now I am leaning towards either Universal or Green Dot and Either Fiochi or Cheddite hulls.
I look forward to learning a lot more about the joys of the 16ga. |

hi all.
I'm brand new to the shotgun world and my father in law gave me his father's early Browning auto 5. Great fire arm, but tough to find ammo locally. I purchased 100 vintager shells from polywad andplan on reloading. I I'll probably pick up some shells from rst to compare. reading through the post on this forum I'm sure there is allot I will learn. thanks for all the tips so far.
