a win 37 or that Savage 220 are what to look for . The hammer on those guns is the 1st thing your cocking thumb finds when in the heat of a flush ! I have one similar to the one in the GB post . the 1st thing in line is the latch lever - doesn't cock well ! Having said that , I still love my little EXCELL ! |

Early post WWII Stevens model 94's like the one I have(16ga.), usually w/o serial# were made with nice stright grain walnut non-dogleg stocks. All I have had my hands on were full choke. My hammer could stand being a little bigger so as to help with cocking. Otherwise a joy to carry and responds well to 7/8 oz. spreader loads of #8's @ 1150 fps.

Thanks All! Man, that's a pretty little 220A, those things are hard to find now days. I think I found a little Winchester 37, 16. I'll let you know how it goes. |

If you want something a bit different from the rest of the folks, give one of these a try:
Husqvarna Rolling Block 16ga, 34" barrel with straight rifling. It's a hoot to shoot and a real head turner. It is not a lightweight.

That is a great old gun, thanks for sharing the pictures. It reminds me a lot of my Winchester low wall in 20 gauge. Thanks again! |

Nice Rolling Block, but I'd guess a 1 1/4oz magnum would really knock your fillings loose |

It's hard to beat a Steelbilt Winchester 37 like I have, but the Savage 220 and the H&R Topper come to mind ,also. I squirrel hunted with an old gent 40 years ago that had an old H&R in 16 that was pretty rusty and had bailing wire wrapped around the wrist of the stock as a repair. It shot pretty hard for him- he knocked down his share of squirrels! Actually, it was his Feist dog that I really wanted to hunt with! |

I've developed a hankering for a single barrel trap gun (don't ask) and since they pretty much don't exist in 16ga, I'm wondering about the feasibility of "building" one out of a single shot 16. So, what would be involved, in the learned brotherhood's opinion? What should I be thinking about?
I just walked away from an Ithaca 4E (12ga) with issues, and since my focus has changed, I'm thinking: "If you're gonna do it, do it in 16!" |

f-t-f ... you CAN get one if you are REALLY lucky . I have a Dan lefever field /trap 12 ga and I believe I've seen ONE over time with the tapered Ithaca trap rib . Probably one of the rarest of rare , but the plain barrel version is around every-so-often . Recently on gb . Simmons rib , good to go ! |

I thought he wanted a16 bore single shot, not a 12 bore handicap trap gun. |

My preference for single shots are H&R's. They're a little bit lighter than Win 37's. Mine is a Mod choke Topper in 16 (of course). I've killed a few turkeys and many squirrels with this one:
