L-R Ben Felton , Scott Cutter , and Myself in Nov. 2007 , On Standing Rock .
Two of my long and Dear Friends and Mentors , I shall forever be greatful for knowing them.
For those of you that had met Ole Ben , I would like to let you all know he passed away the first of the month with a Heart Attack , on his way to come back up here to the lake to shoot a round or two .
For those that do not know , Ben Felton is the reason that I fell in love with the 16 bore and built the DR 16 because of this love of the great 16 bore that he fostered .
I shall miss our long conversations about fancy guns ole friend .
Regards Nick |

Charles, I am sorry to hear about your friend. Godspeed, Ben. I know the 16 is the favored gauge where you are now! |

Sorry to hear about your friend. I am certain that God shoots a 16 gauge English hammer gun and he hunts behind a brace of cockers. Ben will fit right in.
Regards,
Jeff |

My deep condolences.
As we grow older, we lose friends along our pathway. I am in my early 70's, and have already lost many of my dearest hunting buddies:
My Grandfather, who started it all with me. Damn, he could shoot.
My Great Uncle, who was a gentleman, and a great wing shot with his model 12
My Brother-in-Law, who, as a young man showed the enthusiasm of a pointer puppy all his rich and colored life.
My Buddy at the Lake, who I met in my 60's, and who equally loved shooting ducks.
My Lisco, NE Buddy, who loved German Shorthairs, took me to competitions, and left life too early, a victim of debbil rum.
Now, still having the abilities to walk the fields, there is a Grandson:
Dear God, I pray I go first, and long, long before this young man who embodies the true hunter spirit. There are still a few of them left, fellows.

Nick,
So sorry to learn of your friend and hunting buddy's passing. I think I know how you feel. My dad, who was my mentor and hunting companion while growing up on the farm in Illinois, passed away on June 5, one month shy of his 96th birthday.
This is dad shooting wobble clays last year on his 95th birthday at his grandson's place
He taught me to wing shoot with this 20 ga. Ithaca 37 using hand thrown clays.
This is dad's first new shotgun he ever bought, a 16 ga. sxs Springfield-Stevens 215 sxs hammer gun. He had sold it to a friend (who cut off the barrels ) before I was old enough to shoot it. His friend gave it to me a couple of years before he died. I killed 3 pheasants with it on a hunting trip to Kansas with my nephew in 2011.
I'd love to be able to hunt with you and your friends again on one of your trips to Standing Rock sometime. Please let me know if you have room to accommodate one more hunter in your group.
All the best,
Barry Marten |

Nick, that is a damn shame. We were wondering about you two at Flatwater this year. |

Nick, I'm very sorry to hear of your loss. I, too, lost my first and best hunting companion to a stroke earlier this month. |

Nick, sorry to hear about Ben. Like Steve, I missed Ben, Griff, and you this year.
I was fortunate, last year, to shoot several rounds with Ben. We were both trying to make gun deals. He had a double auto, he wanted to sell and I had a Belgium hammer "rabbit gun" he wanted, but no deals were made. Looking back, owning a double auto once owned by Ole Ben would not be such a bad thing.
Take care, Milton |
