I have just purchased a case of Herter`s dove & quail loads. I read somewhere on this forum that the Herter`s hulls are actually Cheddite hulls. Have any of you reloaded these Herter`s hulls in a load that you used a Fed 209 primer?
I have a bunch of Fed 209 primers and would like to use them in place of buying another brand of primer for these particular hulls. Any 16 gauge load information that you might have using this combination would be helpful. |

Are you using the older Fed 209 primer? or the newer Fed 209A primer? The size is the same, the flash is different. |

Cheditte hulls are .242 diameter and Fed primers are .241. Could be a problem you don't need. Cheditte, Rio and Fiocchi are all .241... |

I'm no expert on Cheddite hulls, but i beleve either they are made in China for Cheddite or closely resemble the generic types that are. So it is not always easy to tell just where these closely similar hulls are made now.
Perhaps the best thing to do is to remove a half dozen of the spent primers from your Herter's hulls and mike them. Then mike a few of the Federals. You can also simply prime a few resized hulls to see how the Federals fit. If they seat too easy, then they may be too small. They can be eased back out and reused. If this is the case, then some of the European primers may fit the hulls better. Noble Sports have been working well for me. The Cheddite and Fiocchi primers may be okay too. |

Here is the question he asked.

I didn't see anybody try to answer his question. Just posts on the size of primers. As far as size I have used Fed209A and Win 209 primers in the cheddite hulls with no problem. Check out the links at the bottom of this post and you may find some loads to fit what you asked.
It should also be noted that you should not substitute the Fed 209A primer where it calls for others. Will up the pressure. |

The OP referred to Herter's hulls. Problem. Are we absolutely certain Herter's hulls are actually Cheddites? Perhaps it's best not to assume it.
Measuring the actual size of the spent primers will reveal what the OP needs to know. It's the safest and smartest thing to do IMO. |

Before anyone decides what the OP has, wouldn't be a good idea for the OP to either describe or cut a hull in half and post a picture?
Herter's has used more than one manufacturer's hull. |

I reload Cheddite hulls for 16 ga, 209 A primers work well for a couple of loads them the primer pocket sometimes need to be re-sized as they can become loose fitting. Ballistic Products sells a small toll that does the trick, a little slow but will make them viable for a couple or three more reloads as long as the hull does not split near the crimp area. JMHO |
