Just bought this one - American Browning- in 16 gauge great shape.

Is the American Browning (made 1940-1946 I believe) an exact copy of the Belgian Browning?

thanks for the help.

Welcome to the forum!

The American Browning was virtually the same as the Belgium model. The engraving pattern was different and I think they lacked the magazine cutoff. Some parts may not interchange with the Belgium made guns. I am not sure if the 16ga guns had 2 9/16" or 2 3/4" chambers.

The American Brownings were made by Remington while Belgium was occupied by the Germans and then as the country was recovering from World War II.

Remington had been making a copy of the Auto-5 under license from Browning since about 1905. The Remington gun was known as the Model 11.

Dunno about the 16ga Remington production models , but I have a wartime Light Twelve A5 that does have a magazine cutoff . The engraving wasn't as deeply struck on the American models , and the serial number is on the left side of the receiver , but mechanically , I think they're identical . The pre-war FN brand is mechanically identical as well .

I stand corrected - the American Brownings had the magazine cutoff.

The top of the receiver on at least some of them had a matted finish. That is another difference from the Belgium model.

While the Belgian built A5 had only been built in 2 3/4 inch 12-gauge and 2 9/16 inch 16-gauge, the Remington built A5s of 1940-46 were made in 12-, 16- and 20-gauges, all chambered for 2 3/4 inch shells. Really they are much more a Remington Model 11 with the addition of a magazine cut-off switch, then anything else.
