What kind of hooks do you use and where do you find them? |

First, book yourself one of those premium $10,000 privately guided elk hunts on the Apache indian reservation in New Mexico.
Second, don't miss the damn elk.
Third, have the elk antlers professionally mounted above your fireplace. If you don't have a fireplace this could get a bit more expensive.
Fourth, gently cradle your wallhanger in the midst of the massive elk rack.
It will look awsome!!

CF16,
You may need a bigger loan. The White Mt. Apache Tribe elk hunts are now $16K and the Hualapai Reservation hunts have jumped to $20K It wasn't long ago they were $5-7K. Who said hunting is becoming a rich man's sport

Or you could find a set of antlers on ebay or at a garage sale.
No where near as much fun as a hunt but a whole lot cheaper. |

Hoppe's make a pair of brass hangers, with or without walnut backing. They're pretty cheesy IMHO.
These are nicer.

I was only budgeting $3-4k for this project, so I think I'll have to go with Foursquare's suggestion.
Thanks for all the great ideas, though, guys . |

662,
On the serious side,
I have a couple muzzleloaders hanging in my home that I made some very inexpensive hangers for. Cut a couple pieces of 5/8" dowel rod about 2 1/2" long, drill a hole dead center in one end about 1 1/2" deep just large enough to slide over the head of an 8d finish nail. Sand the other end smooth with a slight radius on the edge, and stain them to closely match the wood on the gun. Drive 2-8d finish nails at the proper location and leave about 1 1/4" sticking out. You will want to hit a stud and install the nails at a slight angle. Slide the 2 pieces of dowell over the nail heads and hang your gun. Stained to match the gun they are hardly noticeable.
