Also I don't think it has extractors, the rings looked smooth where the shells load ( forgive my ignorance of the terminology, never messed with doubles in my life) could be wrong.
Skeet-- so that forearm and extractors are all in one piece I guess? Was wondering how it all stayed together!

OK, a lesson of JOY
If you push the little rod on the underside of the barrels to the rear
of the barrels the extractor will move

Talked to a guy today who had a hammered 1903 LC 12ga with the same barrels as mine, he wanted 500 for it, almost bought it. Not fancy at all but in pretty good shape. He said they quit doing real Damascus in 1898 and this style is called fluid steel? Anyone else heard this? Also any thought on the other gun? Should I snag it up? |

Damascus steel was used (sparingly) well into the teens or later. If his barrels have a pattern like yours it is Damascus. If your gun were fluid steel the underside of the barrels would be stamped Nitro Steel.
Give us more details about the 1903 gun, and look at the barrels for excessive pitting or honing of the bores-- you could be asking for unwanted finger amputation.
Finally, carefully review the excellent information found on the Smith Collectors' site--- lcsmith.org. |

Duh, my bad - that definitely is a FW frame. A couple of my Elsie featherweights are marked "FW" so I assumed incorrectly that the "R" meant regular weight. To add further to my embarrassment my 12ga featherweight Elsie also has that "R" marking.
Laxcoach1, thanks for catching my mistake. I don't like to spread bad info.... |

Skeet and lax- thanks so much for your help. Is that the correct forend for sure? ( I know u can't say 100%) I just wonder how universal the forend is? I will bid on that one for sure and keep my fingers crossed that it will work . I hope I can get it all together, get it checked out and take it out for it's intended purpose! Man will it be neat to take a bird with it after at least 45 years of dust collection. Thanks so much guys! |

Ok did some more research and it looks like the forearm on eBay is from a hammered gun in 1903 -1904. Did the hammered guns use the same forearm as mine? Man I wish the auction weren't over tomorrow!!! Also how much is too much for it? |

I does appear the widths of the forearms are different
between a Regular and a Featherweight. per the drawings

Where in southern Ohio are you? Jerry Andrews in Moundsville , WV, on the Ohio River is my goto LC guru. He would go apesh** over that gun. He is a gunsmith that specializes in old American doubles. He just redid 2 sets of Damascus barrels for me. He has tons of old parts, barrels, etc and would probably be able to fit up a fore arm for you if you cant find the original. I can get you his # if you want.
I am a southeastern Ohio boy, but now live just across the river in
Wheeling, wv
Great gun |

3birdogs- I'm on the other side! Bout 30 min from Indiana border, Cincinnati area. He may be able to assist me still, thanks for the recommendations. Looks like the eBay forearm is not going to work per the drawings, back to square one! |

I don’t know how late LC Smith offered Damascus I’m guess it was into the 1920s. I have a Parker GH with Damascus barrels that was manufactured in 1924. Ask the people over at http://members.boardhost.com/lcsmith/
I sure hope you can find the fore end or a good replacement. Those chain Damascus barrels are a very pretty pattern. I hope those barrels are sound. When properly redone they will be spectacular.
I hope this works...a set of chain Damascus 10 Gauge LC Smith barrels over on the Parker forum Not my photo

I talked to Jerry today and he said that he can make a forend for the Elsie that would be correct and identical to the one lost. It is not going to be cheap but it should be worth it. He also said that the featherweight with Damascus is rare. He said this is the only one he has seen and he had been in the business since '74. I am excited and feel lucky to have this one! Thanks to all for the guidance and for recommending Jerry and his services. Can't wait to have the funds and the time to go to WV and get this finished! Best regards |
