There may be a darker reality here folks. Wal Mart used to locate in RURAL communities and bypassed the big cities. Rural folks are gun friendly. Wal Mart went on the big expansion binge and started building in the larger, more urban areas where Mom and Dad are likely to be "shocked" that their children are "exposed" to guns when they take the tyke to sporting goods to buy a softball, etc. I bet letters to corporate protesting guns far outnumber those from gun owners thanking Wal Mart for carrying guns and ammo!
Yes, Wal Mart carries MOSTLY low end guns that I am not interested in. But those of us who shoot Browning's or Beretta's or Benelli's often forget that for many a lower end gun represents a substantial investment. That is the only way many people are going to get into the sport.
And if Wal Mart quits selling guns then some manufacturers may be in big trouble. I wonder if an outfit like Mossberg can survive if Wal Mart quits selling their guns? Many gun shops aren't interested in carrying the low end Mossbergs. If guns go then I predict it will be a short time until the ammo goes too. What will that do to Winchester or Remington or Federal?
It has become a fad among many to bash Wal Mart. I don't feel that way and I see their decision to stop selling guns at 1/3 of their stores as part of the culture war on gun owners. We are losing! Go to Wal Mart, buy a cheap pump or 22 and take a kid shooting or hunting!

Mossberg will do just fine.
They have massive military & police contracts all over the world.
I live 20 minutes from the factory in North Haven, I been there a few times.
Almost all my shotguns are Mossbergs 7 of 9.
They have a loyal fan base. I even have a Yahoo group for Mossberg owners. I have 25,000 rounds through my M-500 12 gauge, one failure.
the plastic safety tag broke. The factory fixed it free by putting in a new safety meconism, bolt and trigger assembly, then said they were sorry it took 45 minutes.
I great company to deal with.
Its family owned and it shows.
I agree that its sad to see it go here in the North East.
I loved when they sold reloading supplies.
They stopped that 6 years ago.
As far as low end guns they will start turning up in stock at
gun stores. At least that what happened here. |

pezman,
Since you are close why not drop the 16ga hint at Mossberg
I have owned 2 of them (one for 30+ years) and they are super dependable and a great value. It is nearly impossible to hunt in rural Minnesota without seeing lots of Mossbergs. You just have to be careful about bringing them up in fancy places, which generally have other problems with characters like me (Like Old Cars with flathead engines and straight pipes)

Here in Kansas City, Cabelas also walks you to the door when you buy a gun. Same goes if you try to enter the store with one, ie return or to sell. Over the store-wide intercomm, "may I have an escort from firearms to the front desk please?"
We have a Cabelas in operation, and 2 Bass Pro Shops opening soon. Haven't heard the news yet, but would assume Sports Authority is going to come in also.
When I noticed WalMart emptying the firearms here, my first thought was a reaction to competition. Or that their legal staff wouldn't let them make their own Chinese knock-offs.
Lots of other valid comments also apply, even Walmart isn't immune to ATF rules.
Hopefully the few remaining independents will reap the rewards. |

Don't know about WalMart policies being a sign of anything, but hunting is definitely on the decline. The anit-gunner/anti-hunting activists and urban sprawl are killing off our sport. |

Its nice to see that the Southern states haven't changed much since family matters brought me north again. You folks just might win the Civil War yet by default. The South and some of the western states are about the only places left where state's rights and the Constitution mean anything anymore. If things get much worse, it will be the last bastion of liberty in the nation. Independent thinking, freedom loving Americans will be flocking to you. You will need them too.
However, make no mistake! Just because Bush is from Texas does not mean he respects the Constitution like most Texans do. I doubt there are many polititians and power brokers who do. They want power. They do not care much how they get it either. He is no exception. The Bill or Rights is just an impedment to these folks. He has used the war to grab more power. Now our rights to privacy and our safegaurds fron government intrusion are being trampled wholesale. It is the act of a frustrated demagogue.
Also beware of the Democratic party. They are now courting the South and Midwest over the Iraq war. Over 60% of the population wants out. Even mainstream Republicans are now against the way things are being handled in Iraq.
This country is going to be torn apart again as we average citizens try to protect our rights from the clowns in congress and the present administration and still find a way out of the mess we are in in the Middle East. God help us. |

There is a way out of our challenge in the Middle East. Keep up the good fight until we get permanent bases established here like we have in South Korea and Okinawa. We need to be close to keep a close eye on these Muslim radials just like we have been close and keeping an eye on problem areas throughout the world.. I work with many Sunni and some Shite drivers here and thay want peace and freedom and they know who the enemy is. I have been here 32 months now and there has been steady, although sometimes slow progress. Our losses have been low and when the technology to combat IEDs is in use we will take away the only advantage these cowards have. We will cream these rats and finish this and the world will be better. I have been all over Iraq and I see this more as a challenging mission than a mess.
