Gents, I have on hand a couple of bags of the Cheddite 2 1/2-inch hulls to load for my old Model 97. What wad would I need to get a maximum payload for turkeys? Feel free to share a favorite "heavy" load for the shorter shells.
It's either use my 97 or use my flintlock ... |

BP - if you are happy non-mag type person , the 20/28 7/8 loads the boys posted are the bomb for what you are looking for . The loads go from 16gr low pressure 1150 fps to 26 grns and 1550 fps . I've been using the 22 grn approach in my 97 and we both like it . If you want something heavier , in SPR'S generic loads , there's a 1oz load with unique . These are for any case etc . I've used fed cases cut down with the 18 grn load - you can use rem sp wads as they work well for this app . This was my 1st short load , and I'd use it today any time , any where . |

I dont hunt Gobblers but I do hunt geese I have used 7.5 size heavy shot on them .Real potent stuff. I bet a load in BPI's manual would fit in a short as long as it is rolled and the -80 shot cup is cut down a little. OR are you trying to put over an ounce of lead in a short? |

I was hoping for a 1-ounce load, but I am not one who believes turkeys are nearly bulletproof. Only wads I have on hand now are DR16s. |

I squeeze 1 1/8oz into a 2.5" roll crimped hull, z16 wad, and longshot. Works great! You can also try wrapping your wad with clear tape for tighter patterns. |
