I get conflicting info from trying to web search. Gun is listed as German Double guild, possibly Sauer. Local auction coming up. Anyone have a good idea what I'm looking at here?
Thanks in advance. |

Isn't the antler the Ulm proof house in Germany ? Anvil I gots no clue on , and no clue if the antler specifies and testing parameter ( nitro , black powder .......) . And I could be totally wrong . |

Ok, Here's what I've found:
on the flats
The first eagle tells us the barrels have been proofed when unfinished. The second eagle with crown over u under is for proof when the barrels are finished.
Crown over s is for smoothbore barrels, crown over w is for choked barrels. Nitro is for smokeless proof.
on the barrels
What's giving trouble is the antler and anvil. The proof house of ulm used an antler and an eagle as marks for shotguns with nitro proof. Might it be that the anvil is actually a poorly struck eagle? |

Thanks for the help. I went to the auction, but didn't buy this gun. It had a couple of issues. First the forearm was just the slightest bit loose. Second the toe of the stock had been repaired, not a bad job but obvious, as they had carried the repair to replace he butt plate where it broke too.
I did pick up a Winchester 37 steel built in 16ga, probably paid too much. |
