I wear moth-eaten Millar Mitts when I can remember where I left them. Frees up fingers and keeps hands warm.
Nomex military flight gloves are recommended by some.

Probably several mentions over the years.

I have to admit, I tried the MM method of trying to fit or break-in thin leather shooting gloves back when I reckoned such activities worthwhile.
Naturally, I did it wrong Embarassed and at some point the hot water shrunk the gloves with a shocking rapidity to a size best fitting a capuchin monkey.
But, the world still spun.

I wear elk leather work gloves and at 5 am this morning I had an irrigation problem and had to get into the ditch at my pick up point. The gloves got wet and when that occurs, I wear them until they are dry or close to it. Otherwise they become stiff and shrink.

Then there's the fingerless gloves Tony 'Under Wild Skies' Makris wears in the African heat and he carries some expensive double rifles. But I don't know why. I could see if just the trigger finger part of his glove was missing...hand protection from thorns but sensitivity for the trigger shoe. That's not the case. All his glove fingers have been cut off. Perhaps he's a dedicated follower of fashion? Rolling Eyes

The line of reasoning that gloves could cause greater gun damage could be related to this concept: Do not store guns in leather holsters or cases. The tannins and associated chemicals will corrode gun finishes. But, I wear gloves year round, and I am more concerned with bare hands causing sweat damage than the leather. It does not seem plausible that gloves cause more damage than bare hands.

Nope, MM did not get in my head. Pretty sure this was in a SS article a while ago. I prefer wearing gloves now and actually feel I have a better grip on the gun as well as protecting my guns. I do not agree with several of his strongly held beliefs, but his advice on gloves works for me.

A fairly prominent gunsmith once told me wearing gloves could be worse than bare hands. His rationale was that if the gloves had soaked up a lot of sweat over the years then you may have more salt in contact with the gun than just your bare hands. I didn't buy the argument, but he really wasn't trying to sell it either.

I wear gloves and if it gets too warm I take them off and just wipe down the gun after the hunt. The primary reason I wear them is to fend off briars in the grouse woods. I like the deerskin ones Orvis sells but I hate the way the dye comes off on your hands the first few times you use them.

Good Hunting and the seasons are nearly upon us,

I wear gloves for protection from the brush and briars, plus after getting skin cancer burned and scraped off the back of my hands a few times it started to look like a necessity. I use summer weight and regular weight Gungloves which are washable for those worried about the sweat salts collecting in them. During cold weather I like the Bob Allen insulated gloves and sweaty hands and gloves are not a problem then.

Mike, thanks for posting the links. I was able to connect with Ed's, but the other two didn't work for me.

When it's cold I wear gloves. When it ain't, I don't. Any wear I add to a shotgun either way is earned honestly, I reckon.
