I would like to be able to measure shot by the Long Ton. Now that would be an investment. |

On a serious note: The only interest I have in drams eq. is when I am sorting through the dozens of part boxes of shotshells (16 and other ga. I have accumulated) to find loads suitable for a particular shotgun. I am big on 2 1/2 dram loads for 6lb. 16ga. shotguns.

Mike,
I recall being ridiculed for doing that( dismantling factory loads to verify the actual weight of shot load that was listed on the box, and I have found they generally had less than stated- I suppose that they figured it was better to short the customer a few pellets than risk over charging the load and running the pressure up.
With regard to the Dram Equivalent chart- There is only a slight difference for the gauge. I'll look up the charts but the DE for X amount of shot @ Y velocity is fairly close for the various gauges. |

In the early days of 12 gauge steel...I would always cut a shell...just to see and, BBBs and Ts were comparably few in number to tote up.
Several times, the pellets were identical in number but the noted weight told a different story.
Not sure what that means other than early steel performance may have been hampered by more than hunters learning to shoot steel and so developing confidence in different. |

I have some 16-gauge CIL duck loads from the glory days that say they contain 1-1/4 oz of No. 4 shot and will produce 3-1/2 drams equivalent in velocity, or around 1300 fps. I might save them for my last duck hunt when I'm no longer worried about the law.

How much shot can you push with 2.5 drams in a 16? Reno |

Looks to me like 1 ounce at 1165 fps

DRAM EQUIVALENT
The accepted method of correlating relative velocities of shotshells loaded with smokeless propellant to shotshells loaded with black powder. The reference black powder load chosen was a 3 dram charge of black powder, with 1 1/8 oz. of shot and a velocity of 1200 fps. Therefore, a 3 dram equivalent load using smokeless powder would be with 1 1/8 oz. of shot having a velocity of 1200 fps. or 1 1/4 oz. of shot and a velocity of 1165 fps. A 3 1/4 dram equivalent load might have 1 1/8 oz. of shot and a velocity of 1255 fps. Abbreviated Dram Equiv. |
