I lucked on to 8# of it hoping to use it for both trap and skeet. I see plenty of good looking 7/8 to 1oz trap loads in the available tables but virtually nothing for 3/4 oz, which I am partial to for skeet. About 1100 to 1200 fps is my goal for skeet. Anybody got some good recommendations?
I'm using DR16 in Cheddites with the Green Dot and it works fine, but, supply is dwindling..........
Thanks |

I've been using 700X in my 12 ga, 24 gram (7/8 ounce) trap loads for about 10 years now. In my experience, 700X is a reasonably clean burning powder which does not require hot primers for good ignition in light loads if my crimps are firmly formed (firm crimps being a requirement for any extra light shot load weight for gauge load).
I've successfully used 14.5 grains of 700X for my 3/4 and 7/8 ounce 16 gauge loads in a Remington RGL hull under an R16 wad with fillers. It is a fairly mild load w/ either shot load weight. I've never used more than 14.5 grains, but I suspect I could go up to 15.5 grains without any risk of excessive peak pressures in my loads.
16 gauge Cheddite type hulls are a lot roomier than RGL hulls. I suggest you start w/ 15 grains of 700X and work up in 1/2 grain intervals until performance meets your requirements. Should work fine in your 3/4 or 7/8 ounce loads as long as you don't add more than 3 grains max, use standard strength 209 primers, and firm crimps. However, you might need one or two 28 ga nitro card filler wads under the shot to get good crimps, especially for the 3/4 ounce loads. Trial and error will tell you what you need here. Good luck. |

Must be 700X day as I also picked up 8lbs. I'm using a Cheddite hull and the recipe calls for 14.3gr W209 SG16 (1 oz load) 1124 fps 9300 pressure. I'm getting a deep crimp and need a filler. Any idea what gauge nitro card works the best for this recipe? Thanks |

Thanks guys. It's apparent that 700X just isn't going to work for me when loading for skeet, i.e. 3/4 oz into the Cheddites. I'll use it for 7/8 and up in the Federal and RGLs. i.e. for Trap or Sporting. |

A .030" 28-gauge overshot card will take care of your crimp dishing issues. Easier to drop on top of the shot at the precrimp station than to stuff those filler wads in the SG-16. Or you could just drop a Cheerio on top of the shot.
