I'm trying to put together some bismuth loads, components are:
Hodgdon Longshot
Fiocchi low brass hulls
Fio 616 primer
Remington SP-16 wad
Bismuth #5
I have two recipes that I'm considering from the spreadsheets
26 gr longshot and 1 oz bismuth @8800 psi
24 gr longshot and 1 oz bismuth @8600 psi
Netiher of those recipes gets the shot column up high enough to provide a good crimp.
On a whim I put together a shell with 26 gr longshot, a 1/4 inch 20 gauge felt cushion wad, and 1 ounce of bismuth, the crimp was beautiful, but I have no idea if having the extra cushion wad affects the pressure numbers (I'll be shooting from an Ithaca 37, low pressure isn't necessary, just nice). All I know is everything I've read about loading shotshells has pretty well said "follow the recipe exactly", which is rather different from loading metallic cartridges. Reloading brass hulls for my 12 gauge, the BPI book makes it sound like you can add felt or fiber wads to your hearts content to get whatever column height you like. But that's also black powder in brass hulls, this is not.
So what's the good word? |

that will be a great load. the felt spacer will not bother at all. I load that load in new chedites and love it |

Good to hear!
I had assumed so much, but you know what they say about assuming...
Thanks! |

your 1 oz of Bizz takes up 11/8 oz of lead shot space . You aren't loading with a 1 oz lead volumn are you ? |

I used the 1-1/8th ounce shot bar, weighed everything individually before loading up to ensure I wasn't dropping too much shot (0.97 oz drop on average shot drop), and if I didn't use a spacer I would definitely have some volume left.
As it is now, if I load with the spacer, my crimp looks good, is slightly indented, holds well, and if I shine a light through the hull the wad isn't crushed.
I'm using the bismuth from Precision Reloading, who gets it from Eley. Do they run small? I know smaller shot uses a smaller volume (packs better) than larger shot, but I wouldn't think it would make that much volumetric difference. |

If you use real felt for the spacers the extra cushion actually improves patterns. I make my own felt wads with an arch punch and cut 1/2" wool felt carpet padding. I can punch 25 wads in about 3 min. they are dense and tough but will not capture shot pellets like some other types of paper felt wads. |
