I know little about collectable 16ga shells. We found these in a rummage sale today. The price was a little high but I couldn't resist. They are full boxes of 16ga shells. Are they collectable? What is the going price for these? Are any of these more desirable than others?

The most current prices on old ammo is to check recent auction prices on GunBroker or such. As far as desireability, I'm a fan of the old Western Super X, but I guess it's because they are a time machine returning me to the days of hunting with my grandpa.

Well you gonna use about 14.5 grains of Red Dot, nitro card and filler wads, 7/8 ounce of shot, over shot wad and about 1200 fps?

FUN STUFF !! Shocked

You got it Skeetx . Can probably shorten up that case with that load , sounds like one of my winter WABBIT projects . Maybe this yr , the snow will be low enough so that the bunnies will be visable when they come out !

Here is a good place to check value (and to spend money if you aren't careful).

We had a Gambles store in my small hometown growing up and seeing a box of Hiawatha ammo is a memory trigger to those early days of yellow 20 gauge shells with bright shiny brass, blue skies framing fall leaves and crisp fall air. Shotguns, shells, and hunting are more than shotguns, shells, and hunting.

I remember a box of Montgomery Wards Red Head .410 shells my parents gave me one Christmas.

BTW, I have a full box of Western 16 gauge 7.5 shot 1 1/8 ounce that says on the box "All New Plastic." According to one of the sites posted above, it is worth about $16. That's about the same as a new box of 16 gauge shells from the local gun shop. So, it has no collector value I guess, so I might as well shoot them up.

Thanks for the replies. Awesome links. I too enjoy the blast from the past...today. I bought these cause I love the look of them alongside the old guns. I paid $16 for the target loads, lowest price and $25 for the Western X, highest price. I am a little surprised to discover that the empty box is what some collectors are after not the ammo. I saw a pristine rare empty box sold for $400 +.

I found some of these empty boxes in excellent condition on Ebay for $70. Shocked The same box full of live shells in a worn box on GB is selling for $35.00.

I do intend to snort some nostalgic gun smoke soon.
