While looking for a recipe using the powders I have on hand, the loads from the folks at this forum usually don't list the shot size. In the Ballistic Products manuals they specify the shot size i.e.1ounce #8. Say I want to use their recipe but substitute #6 but keep the shot weight at 1 ounce. Will this affect the PSI or FPS, and will it be safe to shoot? Appreciate any input.

Loads are based on pressure and volumn.

The same volumn of #6 weighs less then #8s because
the smaller shot packs better.

So I would say the same shot bushing should be OK but will
give you a slightly smaller mass of shot.

This will not be of concern and not noticeable in the field.

What load are you wishing to use and what gun will it be used in??

Just the guy I was hoping would respond. I'm reloading for my 1923 A.H. Fox Sterlingworth and my Winchester Model 12 from 1947. I've got some good loads done with SR7625 but have some Unique on hand that I would like to try with #6 shot. I've got Cheddite hulls with Cheddite 209 primers, SG16 and SG16S wads, Over Shot OS16 cards, and lots of enthusiasm. Quail and Chuckar season starts on Saturday in Nevada, so I'd like to be ready for both and also be ready for pheasant in central California next week. Watcha think? I'm also using an MEC Sizemaster with the Universal Charge Bar. Does it matter what shot size I use as long as it measures the same weight?

p.s.s Are you thinking of using 2 1/2 inch ammo, it really does eject better
from any Win Model 12 and will also do well in the Fox

Dont fall in love with that recipe. IMR is discontinuing Sr7625 powder as well as a few others including PB

Things are being confused here.

Loads are based on components used, powder weights and shot weights, which in turn are tested for velocity and pressure.

We reload using powder and shot bushings/bars and throw each charge by volume, however the volumes are based on and measured by weight.

For lead loads you can use any size shot from #12 up to BB without a significant change in ballistics as long as you don't change the weight of the payload.....yes the volume will change and you might need to add spacers for small shot or make an adjustment to your reloader to accommodate for different shot sizes.

Don't confuse volume and weights or start thinking that shot volumes somehow significantly affect pressures. Shot weight affects pressure NOT shot volume.

BPI makes Shotshell reloading seem more complicated than it is, because they infer that certain components are more fit for a particular use than others and that is absolutely false to the point of being ridiculous.

So I'm going select a load from the 16ga. reloaders group, and as long as the shot weights are exact the shot size shouldn't matter except for possible crimp issues. I've got overshot cards to adjust one way and can leave a few bb's out if the crimp won't close entirely. I'm loading both 2 3/4" and 2 1/2" shells. The short shells are for my 1923 nickel steel Model 12 and/or my 1947 Model 12. For my Sterlingworth, I need to use higher brass shells to avoid cycling problems and for that I've got some Cheddite shells with higher brass. I won't fall in love with any recipe where the powder is in jeopardy, and that's why I picked up some Unique. Not by choice but because that's all I could find. Thanks for the guidance all. By the way, I'm measuring both shot and powder by weight and use the universal charge bar for that purpose.
