This post will be a lot like sakorick's and Boat's threads and some others, but I'm on a slightly different quest, namely trap loads for my William Evans 16 ga hammer gun. I've been studying this website this morning and there is a lot of information here but much is a bit confusing and hard to reconcile with components that are actually available.
Currently, I'm cutting down Cheddite and Winchester AA hulls on a bandsaw and roll crimping. I use thin nitro and 1/4" Circle Fly wads with 78 gr of Goex Exp 2f and 1 or 1 1/8 oz of 7.5s for clays (5s for pheasants). And these work okay on real birds, not so hot on clay birds.
So, I would like to go to smokeless loads. This is a very light gun, it is proofed at 900 bar, and it uses 65mm chambers (2.5"). I have on hand, Red Dot and a little bit of Blue Dot and Winchester 209 primers (which apparently are high pressure primers). Alliant lists a nice low pressure blue dot loads but they are for hulls and primers I don't have, I presume 2.75" cases, and normal crimps (not rolled).
So, from this, what can I use to get to some decent 1 oz trap loads? I don't know if the SG16 or SG16S wads (long or short) that BPI offers will work with 2.5" shells but at least they are available.
I'm working on getting access to the yahoo spreadsheet but that hasn't come through yet.
In keeping with sakorick's thread, here is the gun in question
Many thanks for our patience and advice. |

Mike those loads look REALLY helpful. Thanks a bunch.
Of course a quick call tells me that there is no 7625 available locally. But somewhere, someday I'll find it.
I didn't realize that components for shot shells was as rare as .22 ammo. |

That is one sweet looking back action lock gun there.
I have Red and a very little bit of Blue Dot and a whole bunch of blackpowder in 1.5 and 2fg.
I have been shooting exclusively the black in this gun.
I do have a bit of some of the faster pistol/rifle powders (IMR 4227, etc) but I don't feel they have any safe application here. |

byrdog
That is one slick invention you have there, but for now, I'm just running them through my bandsaw on a sled that I made for this purpose. It works well enough. However, if I get into this to any great degree, I may have to give your device a try. Quite clever, and I like clever things.
Meanwhile, there has been a big development on the powder front. On the way home I stopped at Gouger's Gun Center and came across two pounds of 7625. One of them cost me a mere $40.65 with tax, but I thought I would order some SP16 wads from BPI and give it a go. I will try some of the loads that Mike posted.
This one pound will give me an idea if the approach has merit, though where/when i will ever find economical amounts of 7625 is not clear at all.
Many thanks.

I hope that is a miss type there and you meant the Sg-16 wads and not the Sp-16.
With the cheddite hulls, using the SP-16 wad and 7625 it would be migration heaven as 7625 is a very fine grained powder.
Should be migration hell. |

Old hunter, thanks for watching out for me. I did indeed, mean SG, or at least that is what I ordered. I didn't know there were both, but by blind luck or something, I got the right ones.
This smokeless stuff is complicated.

Just wanted to say thanks guys. I tried the 20.6 gr loads for 7625 and found they worked quite well. I shot a couple rounds of trap with them and they seemed quite satisfactory. I really do need to pattern the gun but now that I have some loads that shoot w/o excessive fouling it will be a bit easier to get a bit more practice with that gun and become a lot more proficient with it.
Of course, 7625 is a walking dinosaur, but at least I have a place to start.
Thanks again. |
