I was just talking with Keith at Precision Reloading and he told me about a non toxic wad from B&P. It's called the Steel 27. Supposed to be good for lead, Bismuth, steel, etc.

Precision is checking to see if they have any data for it...

http://www.precisionreloading.com/mm5/merchant.mvc?

I'm trying to track down some reloading data for this wad.

Anyone use it?

Any leads?

Thanks!
Lon

Is there some reason you want to use that wad? You can get the VP80 from BPI and there quite a few loads for that wad for steel or other non-toxic loads.

George,

I have VP80 wads and the recipes from the newest, 7th edition for the 16 gauge manual from BPI.

The problem is the VP80 is designed to hold an equivalent to 1 3/8 oz of lead. So, I always have to use fillers...

This B&P Steel 27 wad is supposed to hold 15/16 oz of steel, which I'm speculating will be close to an ounce or 1 1/8 oz of heavier than lead shot material. Also, this wad is pre slit. The VP80 is not.

Finally, I've been pleased with other B&P products.

Thus my asking about loading data.

No, I even checked with the manufacturer and they didn't provide me with any data. Go figure, make a wad but there is no data to reload with it? Doesn't sound like a viable marketing plan but I didn't let that stop me!

I have tested a couple loads with this wad. It is very similar to the VP 80 but the Steel 27 wad is not quite as thick but is pre-slit.

With both of these wads, designed for the lightweight steel pellets, you have to use a lot of filler when using heavier than lead non toxic pellets like TSS and Heavy Weight 15.

Dont know about the Steel 27 wad, but FYI, if developing/playing around with nontox loads, another option for a 16ga wad is the link below. There are published steel recipes for it in the Lyman books. If skeptical look at the specs, the listed diameter is 0.665. I have tried them and they do work.

good luck...

Drug this old post out to seek an update. I am getting ready to purchase either the VP80 or this BP 1627 wad to start reloading steel #7 & #4 for my BPS. I have seen several builds with the VP80, but none on the 1627. Anyone have an update to share or know where I might look for loads?

I have emailed BP to see if they had any new load data to share over the last year.

Thank you!

I never found any published recipes for the Steel 27 wad and pretty much gave up on it for now. However, I like the looks of it with the precut slits as compared to the VP80.

My only suggestion would be if you are serious about using the steel 27 wad then you'd probably have to work up your own load and send it off for pressure testing to be safe.

How about a late Christmas present from Precision Reloading.

Got an email today from Trent at PR letting me know they have no current load data for the wad, but he was very interested in my potential use for the wad as they would work toward developing some loads for it.

Cross your fingers, but maybe this year we'll get some load data which I will be happy to share with the group. Not sure about you, but I am not enjoying cutting my own slits in the VP-80's from BPI.

My request focused on steel loads for small game (#6), pheasant & teal (#4), and duck (#2). I suggested some ideal FPS associated with each need and that others would be interested in potential development of other non-toxic shot using this wad.
