I don't know what these old guns are worth but I ran across this one for $599
Scam or good deal??? Here is the ad below;
A.H. FOX 16 gauge double barrel side by side shotgun. Has 28" barrels known as the "Field" version this has Double triggers. This gun has the auto-ejectors. Matching Serial number is 353681 which was manufactered in late 1916. Has metal front sight bead, not the original stock and the replacement stock that has some damage. Has original butt plate and grip plate. Condition is fair, has some wear with maybe 10% blueing/finish remaining. Both Triggers work, opens and closes easy and safety works fine. |

If shootable it is a great deal. I've paid double that for the same gun to use as a platform for a custom project. The wood does not matter so much to me as I will be replacing the stock with a custom one, it is the condition of the barrels, ejectors, originality and if it is on face that are most important.
As I said for one in shootable condition, I'd grab it. |

I sold a nice one extractors no ejectors for 900 recently. Lot of people will pay more for ejectors. Mine was nice though, if rough at all half 900.

At that price; I'd jump on it like a duck on a june bug!
2 little stories:
I worked in a Cabela's, and had an old friend come in; curious about a side by side.....I talked him into a 12 ga Fox. As a guide on a hunting place, he shot quite a bit. I saw him a month later & asked how he liked the Fox. His reply was "I can't miss with it." Then, I sold him a 20 Gauge Fox as well. A happy customer.
I have a buddy who, on my recommendation, bought a 16 Sterlingworth with 30" barrels, choked full/full. He had them opened to IC/IC, then shot the heck out of doves, and found he can shoot skeet with it better than his high-priced target guns.

Well I passed on the gun. Barrel had pitting in & out both stocks had been replaced.
Mechanically the gun worked as it should. I almost took it when he dropped the price to $400 |

Seller lowered price again so I bought it.
Now he never shot the gun stating age.
You guys that have these old SxS do you
use lighter loads? A gunsmith even recommended
BP loads. Also this barrel is not stamped 2 3/4 shells
does that mean it takes the 2 9/16?

I'd go for RST 2 1/2" shells. Great ammo and it will not pound the old girl. B&P is pretty warm to be using in a gun that old, and actually B&P does not recommend their shells for other than modern guns.
My opinion, and what I use in almost all my shotguns anymore.

RST sounds the best option. I didn't see any data on pressure for these. Any idea what they are? My earlier post BP was in reference to black powder |

I don't have the pressure data readily available, but if memory serves me, most 1oz RST loads ran from the high 5,000 psi to mid 6,000.
If you give them a call, they will gladly tell you the pressure for any of their listed loads. Very fine people to deal with!
