I was at Dick's today and noticed some Federal 16-gauge ammo on the shelf marked as containing 1-1/8 oz of No. 4 at 1425 fps. Yes, that's one thousand, four hundred, and twenty-five feed per second. Pretty damn fast. I'm thinking, "Who needs that?" Of course, I bought several boxes! I'm going to shoot this through my 1100 so I don't break all the expensive crowns in my mouth. There may be one or two other people who would buy this stuff. If you are out there, speak up so that I don't feel like a lonesome soul.

Looks like it might be useful for late-season, long-range tough birds. Anything else, it just might turn into a puff of feathers.

Maybe a turkey load.

Why so much speed with a relatively heavy lead load and not as much speed with the steel load? Doesn't seem to make sense to me.

Federal donated a flat of this ammo for the Sweet 16 shoot last spring. Folks seemed to like it. Several years ago I spoke with a Federal rep at a big shoot. I asked why they didn't make their good old pigeon load (12 gauge 1 1/4 oz at 1220 fps) in 4, 5 and 6 shot for hunting - this is an exceptionally good shell. He told me that the ballistics guys understand what makes an efficient, good patterning load, but the more shot they stuff in a shell and the faster they make it go the more they sell. They are just giving the majority of the people what they want - trying to make up for poor wing shooting skill with powerful ammo. I have 6 boxes left of the following that were given to me. Now this is rip snortin' ammo. Buffered plated shot and this is the real deal - electro plated. I shot 2 shells over my chronograph and it's going 1330 fps. I do not shoot this stuff in my 1915 Flues.

If you can't read the price it's $9.99. Spendy in its day.
Regards,
Jeff

If you aren't suffering from vertigo before you start shooting those heavy loads, you will when you finish. The real question is, how often do we have one of those long long shots requiring the heavy loads. And if the bird does go down, do we pick up the regular loaded shells out of the grass or go and track down the bird? Inquiring minds really need to know this before we start loading up for that once a day long way off bird.

And how does one become lightening fast with the changeover from the regular load to the high power stuff when the pheasant rises 40 yards out? Quick Draw McGraw may be able to do it, but few of us common folk can.

I would use it on pheasants, especially after thanksgiving.
Nothing wrong with more velocity, nothing.

1 1/4 oz. Mag 5's @ 1200 fps.

I'd much rather shoot this if I need long range punch.

(Shhh, it's a 12 gauge.)

Jason, it's a factory RST load. They list it as their "Pheasant Load," and it's really a knockoff of the "pigeon load" Jeff mentions above.
