are winchester empties in 16ga hard to locate ? the ones he is interested in have actual brass heads and an 8 point crimp and are of the "low brass" confirguation

i met a very nice gentleman, who also happens to be a member here, and he looks for these hulls for reloading. I told him I would help look.

so edumacate me on the finer points on locating such hulls as I have to assume that they are older and have to be of a quality construction in order to be successfully reloaded numerous times.

We have an old gun shop full of lots of cool guns that has old ammo. I am going to start there.

Thanks!

Yes
They are difficult to find and becoming scarcer
as they have not been made for decades.

Winchester compression formed hulls is what they are called.

They're great hulls, but you and your friend would probably be more productive developing some loads using the various Cheddite hulls available either new or in some of the factory loadings. I've basically given up on the other hulls available now days and use the new Cheddite hulls for my hunting loads and reloads for clay practice.

Riflemeister: just curious why you are moving away from all other hulls? I'm not new to shotshell loading but have recently added 16ga to the bench so I'm curious why your statement. Thank!

I've just not found another readily available hull that loads as well. I have a good supply of Rem Game Loads, but they are only good for a couple of loads before splitting the neck. I've loaded some Federals, but had trouble finding a load I wanted to shoot that gave good crimps. The Cheddites just work better for me.

Thank you, Sir. Appreciate your perspective! I have some of the Herter's from Cabela's so I'll keep saving those!

A few years ago a man showed up at the club accompanied by his daughter. She shot trap occasionally at the club. She wanted to know if he could throw a bunch of old shells and other trash into our dumpster. I said sure, but let me look at the stuff to make sure none of it was dangerous stuff.

Obviously the 300 or so paper 16 gauge Winchester hulls, having been fired, were not at all dangerous. And the felt wads, over powder and overshot cards weren't dangerous, either. So I told the man to just leave them with me and I'd make sure they were property disposed of.

And, in spite of the inconvenience, I did as I promised.

I have maybe 25 of the hulls you are looking for that are once fired. If you send me your address I will send them to you.

Regards, Gordon

You, sir. are a selfless individual. I use paper hulls occasionally. The smell of fired paper hulls takes me back to my miss-spent youth.

I loved them and they were my favourite in the 80's and 90's

As they are hard to come by it almost hurts to use the ones I have left up, that i am mostly RMC now

I prowl a couple of small gun stores in the area that often have old or arcane stuff. I score about 1 box of WW compression formed hulls per year. I save them for special loads. Since I shoot a SXS, I don't have to worry about them landing in the weeds. Personally, I find nothing wrong with Federal hulls and use them with card wad loads. Also a small supply of old R-P Mohawk and Shurshot hulls.
