Back in early October I picked up a std. A5 "X" serial number 16 ga. Took it out a few times during the season and bagged some pheasants with it. Nice gun but a little heavy.
Today I went back to the same gun shop (Kittery Trading Post) and spotted a Sweet 16 on the rack. Serial number X66610. Picked it up and it felt so much lighter. Put a deposit on it. Plan to go back Monday and trade the std. 16 back to them. I know I won't use the heavier gun once I have the "sweet".
The sweet is in good shape. Only drawback is it has a Ploychoke. I know that would bother the purists but doesn't bother me. Didn't check the chamber size but I assume all the "X" serial guns are 2 3/4. |

Nothing wrong with a polychoke if you like it! And all the "X" serial number Sweets should have 2 3/4" chambers as they were made after World War II. Enjoy! |

X66610 was made in 1952. Cross bolt safety, no speed load. I like Poly Chokes too. Enjoy your new shotgun. Merry Christmas! |

Noticed that the brass compression ring was a little snug/tight. Try some grease ? |

Yes they need a bit of lubrication. Light weight grease or a good gun oil. |

Put some grease on the compression ring. Ran 6 target loads thru the gun and everything cycles fine.
LOP is about 14 1/8. Feels a little short to me so I bought a 1/4 inch spacer and will get that fitted so it should feel just right.
All set for next hunting season........ |

There had been a lot of chatter here about the weight of the "Sweet". My good friend Bill K had a post on this. I just weighed mine on a digital postal scale. It weighed out at 7lbs 1oz. Thought is might be a little lighter but the Polychoke must add a couple of ounces to it vs a regular barrel. Barrel lenght is 26" incl. the Poly.
By comparison my Citori 26" Limited edition Lightning weighs 6lbs 10oz.
The Sweet's competition for my favorite upland semi......my Beretta 390 20ga , 26" barrel weighs 6lbs, 9oz. Back when I had fewer guns that was my prime upland gun. Nice and light and points the birds reall well. Now it has lots of competition !!!!!!! |
