Here is a pic from the few hours I got to hunt on the Michigan Grouse opener. One 16 in the mix.....

We shot up a lot of leaves and one bird. It was a bird of the year but had a full tail like an older bird. I think this means that the weather may have been easy on the early nesting season and a good crop of birds this year. Let's hope it's true.

The Parker is a VHE 16 with 26" barrels. It's a very early Remington era gun but made in Meriden before the move. I'd prefer longer barrels on a light gun but it is perfect in those tight Michigan covers. The Sterly is a 20 ga.
The Flues is a 12. And we were hunting within an hours drive of Emil Flues grave.
I did the refinish of the Flues for a good friend, John Kluesing, He's a wonderful guy and IMO the finest fishing guide in the state. I was very pleased with the way the wood came out.
We also caught some nice fish:

I actually lead the life I dream about, about 1/52nd of the year!!!!!
Now this is really going to sting, just do yourself a favor and stop reading now.....
I got home around midnight and there was a message waiting for me, the local Spaniel club was holding a hunting test the next morning and needed shooters. They are really nice people and hey, they needed help.
I was there at 9:00 AM and they had a couple of guns lined up but I was invited to join in the roatation anyway. Then I hung around till the end and helped use up all the left over birds. They even let me put out my Lab on 6 birds.
Luke TWD had never been on upland game before but based on what I saw would have held his own with any of the dogs that competed. In addition to the birds I shot over him he found and retrieved 5 more that the spaniels had been unable to locate....
I finished the day with about 35 Chukar notches on my belt. They gave my dog a retrieving dummy for helping out and me a few nice cold beers.
Jeff
Oh, one more thing. My better half was feeling frisky too. Really. |

Damn, that must've been one tough bird if it took 3 guns to bring him down! |

Ever hunt a Michigan grouse cover on Sept 15th?
Under the circumstances a 16 ga pistol with a 4 5/8" barrel is the ultimate grouse gun.
