Too bad we didn't get these rains in late April and during May. These rains won't do much to influence this years crops (agricultural or bird) but should recharge the ground moisture for the fall wheat planting which may lead to better nesting and brood rearing conditions next spring. |

The new Kansas Upland Forecast is out !
Hope it is as good as they are predicting. Over the years I have found it to usually be fairly accurate, neither sugar coated or watered down.
The only bad thing with a forecast this good is there will be a bunch of hunters

Some stats I received from a KS Wildlife Biologist:
Quail:
West -37%
NC -10%
SC +9%
Flint Hills +31%
NE +92%
SE +17%
Statewide +8%
Highest index SC at 2.09 quail/observer day
Pheasant:
NW -18%
SW -42%
NC -8%
SC -20%
NE +31%
Statewide -23%
Highest index NW at 7.18 pheasant/observer day NC next with 4.77
Quail were 23% above the '01-'05 5 year mean.
Pheasant were 3.3% below the 5 year mean.
Looks like quail in the Flint Hills and NE are coming back Gloria a Dios. NE KS has never had the pheasant numbers like western KS so the 31% increase, though good news, probably still means fewer birds than NC and NW. Suspect the hoards out of KC will be all over those birds. |

Quail in west Kansas are down 31%; guess that means one of the three of them won't be back !
