I discovered this old box of 12 ga. Federal Field Load paper shells that dad had reloaded with 1-1/2 oz. of #5 shot. Checking with Federal Premium Ammunition, I was told that their shot shell lot records go back to 1966, and that they had no record of that particular lot number. The person I talked to also did not know the significance of the No. 11 over 79A-65 stamped in red on the bottom flap.
I now believe dad reloaded these paper shells prior to 1966 and possibly as early as the late 1950's when dad, his two friends and I drove a couple of hours North to hunt pheasants around Gibson City, IL one or two times a year.
During a hunting trip to Kansas in December, I killed 3 pheasants with those old shells shooting the 12 ga Model 90 dad gave me in 1957.

Mike,
Thanks for the information! Address on the bottom of the box: Federal Cartridge Corporation, Minneapolis, MN 55402 USA. So, probably 1963-1965?

If it is a '70's vintage box, why did the Federal rep. tell me they had no record of the lot number? Perhaps I should call back and ask them again! |
