Who has used both and what circumstances favor one over the other. James

I have and as spelled out in their product descriptions the "S" one is designed to settle deeper into a powder charge used in loads that need a bit less load height or vise versa. The difference can be seen in the 2 different product pictures on the BPI site, look closely in the over powder cups and you'll see the difference. The annular tabs sink into and all the little pins/posts sit on top of a powder charge.

There is really not much difference in the two but the S wad will give you a little extra room , I use them load 1oz in 2 1/2" hulls
