I was building a new steel shot load to try for doves I pulled out of Lyman's. I've found the shot column is too short for this load with a psi of 9200. I experimented and discovered a 1/8" felt wad under shot and a thin osc resulted in perfect crimps/shot column.
Should I be concerned about pressure with these type of additions?
I have always followed the advice of this article:
https://www.ballisticproducts.com/bpi/articleindex/articles/curmudgeon_articles/060131_load_adjustments.htm
but wanted to get others opinions. |

Filler wads placed inside the shot cup under the shot can't to any significant degree. Anything placed on top of the shot column or under the plastic wad might. How much is anyone's guess. Lab trials will. Carefully observing field testing might too if the resulting effects are very obvious (not a good idea if the unmodified average load pressures are already over 9.5K PSI or if the gun used is not a stoutly built modern design).
Will a very thin overshot card wad placed on top of the shot significantly affect the load pressure? Probably not the load pressure, but it might very well affect shot patterns. How much? Who can say. Only a pattern board can tell us anything. |
