Long story short, I don't see how I can get a 7/8 oz load of shot into an RGL with DR-16 wad. Just ain't working--the shot comes almost to the top of the uncrimped hull. Not sure what I'm doing wrong because I know lots of you guys do it. I THINK I've rammed the wad as far as it will go--top of cup is below the crimp fold line. Even then 7/8 oz overflows the cup.
I'm very experienced reloading rifle ammo, but this is my first try for shot shells.
Full recipe--from Hodgdon site is:
RGL hull
Win 209 primer
DR-16
14.6 grains International Clays
I know that may not be everybody's cup of tea but those are the components I have at the moment.
Any advice would be appreciated. |

I load 3/4 oz with international and the DR16.
I load 7/8 using the chedite hull.
Never have tried to cram 7/8 into the RGL with the DR 16. |

Thanks to you both for such helpful replies! At least I know I'm not crazy.
3crosses, would you mind telling me how much international you use with the DR16 and 3/4 oz of shot? Many thanks. |

In an RGL hull you can make nice 7/8 oz loads with an SG16 wad.

as we've stated many times in the past , RGL's can be as much as 1/8'' different length . As you accumulate caseings , begin to check their length against one another .The full length will handle the 7/8 better . The shorter ones better suited to the 3/4 load . As Mike will attest to , the RGL is perfect for loading 20ga 20L wads and FED 20 SI's . Sounds so weird , but those wads are in fact the same diameter as 16ga SP's . You may find other reloaders who are not likeing those wads and part with them on the cheap ! ... this gang has taken the 16 light yrs beyond where it was even 5-6 yrs ago . 5/8 loads to 13/8 - sheesh ! (or , YEE HAWW !!) |

RGL
SG20L
16.5 Int. Clays
3/4 oz
W209
These seem to work as well as any of my 7/8 oz. loads and are FUN to shoot in a bird gun.
Edit to add I'm a big fan of the DR16 and plan on using them for all my 7/8 oz. in Cheditte/Federal hulls. |

662- If you look at my thread on recoil of a 7/8 oz load, you'll see I'm using exactly the same recipe, but Green dot for the powder(same charge weight). I use a sizemaster press and am getting wonderful crimps. I don't know if GD takes up that much less room or I got lucky and all my rgl's are the long ones or both. Its definitely full but works great. |

Somewhat tangential to the original post but hoping you guys can offer some advice.
I noticed when using the DR16 wad in once-fired 16 ga. Win X-pert hull that the wad slides awfully easy - so much so that when I turned the hull upside down it slid right out! Doesn't seem right to me.
I then loaded a few into the DR16 wad into once-fired 16 ga. RGL hulls and it slides too but not quite as much.
Not comfortable with this - is it possible if a loaded shell jiggles around in a vest or pouch the powder could work its way around the wad? How does a loosely fitting wad affect the pressure?

Don't know how much I can help with this.
Yes the wad fits loosely in the win hull.
But, I have been loading them for a couple of years now and have had no issues with powder migration. |
