I am looking to buy or trade for 2 boxes of steel 3's. I have never shot 16 ga steel. I have a new Model 37 that I will be using for some duck hunting this fall. I have never had confidence in Steel 4's and I think the 16 payload is small for steel 2's. I cannot find any steel threes on the market.

I have about 50 mixed Remington and Federal 16 hulls that I have been saving from the 80's. I also have a few new Federal, Rio, and Remington hulls laying around. I also have 200 plus 10ga steel hulls from the 1990's. I would trade any or all of these plus some cash for 2 boxes of hand-loaded threes.

I also have a nice 48 sportsman available if you are interested in that.

I am leaving for Ontario for grouse and ducks on Sept 12, and would like these for that trip.

Send a PM

Thanks

Marshall

fourtown,

Others may know to the contrary but I don't believe you're going to find #3 steel in 16 gauge factory ammo. Remington and Federal only list #2 & #4 in the larger shot sizes.

At one point, there was a small custom ammo manufacturer that loaded 16 steel but I don't recall their name. A search of the site might bring it up.

Shoot hevishot 16ga duck loads in #4. the last place to economize is with the ammo for a hunting trip.

I have used a lot of the 16ga Federal Steel loads in both #4 and #2 on ducks and geese. On paper, it does look like pellet density could be a little sketchy with the #2's for ducks, but I have been amazed with how deadly these are within 35 yards. I'm not talking about just knocking them down, but really crushing them - dead in the air. The load just seems really efficient, and maybe all those pellets are getting there at the same time. I'm mainly shooting mallards in my neck of the woods, hunting over decoys, and I do wait for close shots. #4 are not nearly as effective in my experience. I've also killed a fair number of geese with the #2's while duck hunting. Anyway, you might want to give a box of the #2's a try.

4's work absolutely fine. I have killed hundreds of big and small ducks with them in a variety of guns, especially 20 ga. For that matter I have bagged a great number of big ducks like mallards while using 5's or even 6's for teal. 6's kill mallards a whole lot further than one would believe. I even have a copy of video footage from the late 70's with Tom Roster and his friend Walt knocking the tar out of mallards with 6's during a research project. Take the 4's and have a good time up north.

I will second: Sporting Ammo. I used a couple of boxes of their #3 steel before I started reloading my own and they out performed the Federal #2 steel loads.

The original owner died and the company was purchased. I met the new owners at the Michigan Waterfowl Festival last month. They have a Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/sportingammo

..16 gauge Sporting Ammo #3's through Briley MOD choked Model 12 has accounted for many, Many Pacific Flyway ducks and geese over the last few seasons..

Price went up after Fred, was it? , died but I think they were about $15/box last fall. I recommend and will be ordering 10 boxes soon.

Thanks for all the info and replies. I was unaware of some of these no-tox options.
I traded Putz some hulls for reloaded steel 3's. I am mostly packed and am leaving for Ontario in the morning.
