Opening weekend sharptails in ND with RobP and his Drahthaar. Quick day --40 minutes hunting, two flushes. Not all days are like this. Couple of AyA's.

Last weekend was harder, but OK.

Yes, every year we run into some Hungarian partridge. Rob shot two opening weekend this year. We had five with the first six shots two years before. Wish there were more.

Sorry, I don't have any pics of the dog, but the dog's owner, Robp, has some. Fun dogs, aren't they.

WOW...nice looking birds. We don't have sharptails here. How do you hunt them ? Do they hold ? Would like to know more. My son lives in Colorado. Any sharptails there ?

I love hunting the prairie no wolves, no ticks, no traps, impossible to get lost

@ rjlance -- Sometimes they hold so close you'd have to step on them if you didn't have a dog. Sometimes they don't. They hold better in early season, but that's no guarantee. They are grouse, so when they fly, they want to put things or distance between you and themselves as quickly as they can. With fewer things to hide behind than ruffed grouse, they tend to fly rather than run like a woods grouse. Once they fly, they go a long ways and a re-flush opportunities are few. There's always an exception, and in early season they can go a surprisingly short distance. Late season? -- they go miles. One of their biggest defenses is seeing you, as they live in fairly open country. If they are in the open and see you, you'll never get close. If you can see them its too late, unless they walk into cover, and it's early season. In late season, they band up in very large flocks -- sometimes hundreds -- and you can't get within one or two hundred yards of them. In early season, they will hold tight if they think they can't be seen. We get them in brushy or grassy hills. In the afternoons they seem like to like the shade under scrubby bushes. In cold mornings they like to be out of the wind and in the sun if possible. They could be anywhere. They eat everything. We hunt around my childhood home area. I hunted them without a dog for years and years, and can say it is quite a bit better with a dog.

Gastronomically speaking, Sharptails, having dark flavorful flesh, are not high on most people's list. Those people are missing the boat fairly big-time. Either cook them quickly to medium, (RobP showed me how to cook them just like Steak Diane and they are marvelous) or braise them as in Coq au Vin. Just had the latest batch for supper that way tonight. Sharptail meat has to be amongst the most healthy and nutritious on the planet today, considering their diet of mostly native, non-GMO plants and insects. Better for you than some GMO, RoundUp-Ready corn-fed pheasant. I'll eat just about any bird, though, even pheasants Wink

Thanks Maximussmoke. Sounds like fun. Wish we had them around here. I haven't met an upland gamebird that I didn't enjoy eating. Even Woodcock !!!!
