The claybuster website lists data for the new 16 ga. wad with a Winchester X- pert hull.I remember the old compression formed X-pert shells from years ago,but I'm not surewhat hull they are referring to.Why would they publish data for A new wad with an outdated hull?Let me know what you think. Winchester has been using polyformed hulls for quite a while. Not all of these plastic polyformed hull types are Cheddites. Earlier versions have slightly different plastic base wad inserts. But it hardly matters. Most closely similar straight walled polyformed hulls w/ plastic base wad inserts have nearly identical internal dimensions. They can all be safely used for light duty loads w/ average peak pressures of 9K or lower PSI. Pressures and velocities might vary to some minor degree depending on exactly which hull you are loading, but the loads will all be safe and reasonably effective.
As long as your Winchester X-pert hulls are not the one piece compression formed type, then the data shown in fn16ga.'s post should work work well for you. So, no worries. Load 'em up, shoot 'em, and enjoy!!
Interestingly enough, and despite the different cushion section lengths, the DR16 wad and the Claybuster wad must be close enough in overall configuration to be just about interchangable for 7/8 ounce loads in Cheddite type hulls. However, I think you will find the Claybuster 7/8 ounce wad works a bit better for one ounce loads, while the DR16 wad will work better for 3/4 ounce loads in similar hulls. |

16GG , you might be right about the CB 7/8oz being good or better for 1 oz loads for straight walled hulls . But with the DR wad I get great 7/8 oz loads in 2 3/4" straight walled hulls .
I would not use the PB claybuster data in a straight walled hull for fear of powder migration . |

Has anyone measured and compared the length of the clay buster wad vs. the downrange wad? I have a hunch that the downrange will yield better crimps. |

When Claybuster's made copies of the WAA16 they specifically made the over-powder sections larger diameter than the old Winchester AA's, knowing they were going to be used in something other than the extinct W-W compression formed cases. Yes, the old WinAA wads work in those thick-walled Rem GameLoad hulls, so no probs there for the CB clones. But for most powders, I'd think there wouldn't be much of a migration problem even in a Cheddite/Fiocchi or the like. Worth a little investigation for some fine slippery powders, though -- like Longshot or HS-6. Of course there's always the over-powder cup flaring trick. |

In some cases yes , but that depends in what hull you are using and how much shot. |

Exactly so. I've measured the wad base diameters of both the CB clones and the DR16 wads. They are the same slightly bigger diameter for the same reason. They will both fit reasonably well in any existing 16 ga hull. Nick knew exactly what he was doing when he designed the mold for his DR16 wad. Claybuster took their lead from him I'll wager.
I prefer using flake (disc) powders any time I have the choice for obvious reasons. For any heavier hunting loads calling for slower burning fine grained ball powders, I agree with pre-expanding the wad bases before seating the wads in a Cheddite type hull. However, I suggest to first dip the base in steeping hot water, and then press it to a suitably sized steel ball bearing or other suitably sized steel sphere. The heated plastic wad base will set to size as the steel sphere expands it and acts as a heat sink to help cool it. |
