Just starting out loading the 16 after 45 years or so with the 12 and 20.
I've been looking at some heavy loads for an upcoming pheasant hunt. I see a lot of loads using the SG16, Z16, and SP16 wads. Neither the SG16 or the Z16 will hold even a weighed 7/8 payload let alone 1 1/8. Yes I know you want some shot above the wad for help opening the crimp and other reasons, but this seems a bit excessive.
I'm planning on using Cheddite hulls and lots of recipes call for the Rem SP16 and the CB16 wad with Longshot, especially from the powder manufacture. I was under the impression that powder migration was a problem with this combination, that we need to use wads designed for straight wall cases with the cheddites, Federals and such.
What 1 1/8 loads at around 1200-1250 or so do you have good luck with? I have on hand, Unique, 800x and some Longshot along with SP16, SG16, Z16 and DR16 wads.

I've been getting great patters with:

Ched hull
Sp16 wads
1-1/8 oz #5 mag lead
Win 209 primers
800x 21.5
1240 fps
9200 psi

I pattern using mod 12 using a light mod choke.

Thanks Charlie, that's pretty close to one of the loads I had written down to try. I'll be shooting a new Dickinson Estate sxs and need to pattern 6s and 5s to see what it likes.
Is the Rem SP16 considered a fit for the straight wall cases? It sure measures smaller than the Italian wads.

I've had a issue with the load, but due to my learning error with very shallow crimps. I've had enough feedback to feel okay using sp16 or cb wads in straight walls when I'm using 800x, herco, blue dot, and green dot. I think unique might be okay too but not tried. I'd say its important to get a nice tight load.

I'd avoid the sp16 or cb wads in straight hulls with longshot. Reserve that wad and powder combo for the remmy hull.

Here's another idea: Buy a few boxes of cheap Rem shells for practice and save the hulls. Rem hulls and SP16 wads with 800X is about as good a 1 1/8 oz load as there is.

SP16 Remington Wads, Longshot and Remington hulls work great for 1 1/8 oz.

I agree with Bob (seems to be a going trend on 2 message boards). My backup load has been Remmy hulls using Longshot and the SP16 with 1-1/8 oz of #5. I think it is a Lyman's 5th Edition load something like 1233 FPS and 10,400 PSI.

Patterns better out of my 53' Wingmaster then my Model 12 (figure that, a remmy setup prefering a remmy gun).
