I shoot an Ithaca 37 for trap, here is my current reload that works great
rem game load hulls
win 209 primer
claybuster wwaa16 wad
1oz #8 shot
18 grs of universal powder
its a light accurate load
what I want to do is, every thing the same except
7/8 oz #8 shot
dr16 wad
19 grs of universal powder
will it work? my main goal is to save money on shot, and still be a light accurate load even though I use a little more powder, but its cheap compared to the shot, I will save 1 cent a round, .25 a box. |

Both Universal and Unique powders are best used for 1 ounce loads. I strongly suggest you go w/ 16 gr. of Green Dot or Int. Clays for your 7/8 ounce trap loads.
FYI, your load componants w/ 16 gr. of GD or IC is considered to be the "gold standard" 7/8 ounce load by many of us here. The load patterns beautifully w/ a nice dense core for use on trap targets. Good luck. |

If you have a rattail file or dremel you can get it to drop what you need |

Yup. 14 grains of GD is too light for trap shooting. If you are going by the bushing chart, then you will probably be throwing less powder than 14 grains to boot. So squib loads which will cause you a lot of avoidable grief are probable.
Best keep in mind that MEC powder bushings always throw lighter than what the chart says they will (as will most other brands of bushings). Bushing charts are purposely designed to avoid any possible product liability issues. Just how it is in today's tort happy world.
If you don't already have one, best get an accurate powder scale and use it to select the correct bushing based on what it actually throws from your reloader. You might find you have a suitable bushing already on hand by going up a few sizes on the chart and check weighing the actual thrown charges.
I've found that going up the bushing chart by two sizes seems to always get me in the ball park, but I never guesstimate based on experience either. I always check weigh my initial powder drops to be certain. I hope you do too to avoid some nasty surprizes. Good luck. |
