I reload the Rem black game load hulls for trap. when is it time to pitch the hull? a few have a split in the fold of the crimp, still ok to reload? some have the split past the crimp into the hull tube, pitch or ok?

I reload a hull until the crimp folds start to crack or the crimp shoulder starts to pin hole. With RGL's that is 2 or 3 reloads.

Some guys let them crack a lot, but I am against using hulls that are cracked down the side. Hulls are supposed to swell and seal the powder gases from getting into the breech.

When they split past the crimp, or folds of the crimp are blown off.

For serious hunting loads, I want the most performance I can get. I use only once fired hulls w/o any noticeable flaws. Same goes for registered and league trap target loads. Only perfect once fired hulls can crimp perfectly enough for those serious tasks at hand. Why risk a lost target or a lost bird on a badly crimped load. Doesn't make any sense to me considering the time, effort, and money we spend on these pursuits.

For practice and fun loads at the local club, I use up my more than once fired hulls until the hull mouths begin to show appreciable wear like minor splits at the folds or pin holes at the creases (like DC has already posted). Why wait until those much used hulls will probably not crimp well enough to perform even half decently. That's asking for trouble like blooper loads, stuck wads, and having to screw around with a plugged barrel while others are waiting to take their turns to shoot. None for me thanks. It's inconsiderate. I like to play nice w/ others if possible. Very Happy
