If it's an emotional choice, then the M12 wins. If it's a practical choice (as in which one do you use the most?) then the M31 wins for me, and I own 16s in both.
byrdog: My 31s function flawlessly with any ammo I happen to choose. My M12 in 16 can digest only short (and somewhat expensive) RSTs.
I view the 31L as the poor man's doublegun. In the right hands, arguably as good in the uplands as many far-more expensive side by side birdguns.

Lloyd, I agree on the M31 taking any ammo given it. I shoot RST's in my 31L, mainly because they pattern wonderfully, and also, recoil wise, they don't batter the gun or me!

Yes, my 31 also isn't a bit fussy about ammo. Never before anyone assert that Remingtons will only work with Remington ammo.

My Husky sxs hammer gun in 16 ga and full chokes. Then the model 12 in 16ga full chock, next would be the gun I've shot forever Browning A5 in 12ga. |

I have one of each and voted for the 31. Interesting to see the poll at 50/50. Every time I go hunting pheasants I do bring them both and probably use them equally. |

Philistine 870 guy here when it comes to pumps, but I see the merits of both the 12 and 31, so I call it a draw. |

I own both. My one and only 31 is a standard, and not a 31L. I prefer the 31 for 5 stand/SC with 1 oz. loads, simply because it's a bit heavier. My 31 will cycle anything, while my M12's work best with RGL's. I prefer my M12's for hunting because they're lighter, and better balanced. I have no plans to sell either.

Well,
I don't drink beer, I'm a Coca-Cola man. I like white bread, raisin bread being superior, and I enjoy spam sliced thick and fried in a pan with fresh ground pepper on top.
That said...I'll take a Model 31 over a Model 12 any day. Fit, function and takedown vastly superior to the winchester.
And that said... the BPS is one of the finest pump guns produced. I can't see there is a currently produced pump gun that is comparable. Old Ithaca 37s are excellent pumpguns. The new production models are too damn expensive. And far too heavy. In every gauge.
Ps...pass the wonderbread, I think I'll make a PB&J... |

I own and shoot the mo.37, the mod12, both in 20 and 16. I also own and shoot the31L in 20 and the 31 in 16. These guns were collected to be used predominantly for rabbit hunting with thick cover and are all either cyl or I cyl. It's very hard to pick but the only one of the guns I would sale is the mod. 12 20ga. I am new to the 31's , but they are slick slide actions and the31L is light and fast. Would like to find a 31L in 16! |

I've had a 1953 vintage 26-inch improved cylinder 16-gauge Winchester Model 12 for 35 years, and just got a 1936 vintage 28-inch full 16-gauge Remington Model 31 this month, so it will take a while to sort out.

Well, I have never cared for any Remington I have ever picked up, 31 included. The Model 12 feels perfect in my hand so that's the way I went. |

A gun should be made of steel and wood, not alloy and plastic. |
