Hi all! I am new to the forum and have just recently been gifted a verney carron helistop. This I believe is from around the 1930's. It's a 2 1/2" 16ga and from visiting local gun shops to try and find shells I'm learning that's kindof unique. The stock was cracked when I received it and the action was kindof gummy but I had a gunsmith fix the stock, clean it up and check it out and now I'm really looking forward to getting some use out of it : D
Here are some pics. I'll really be looking forward to learning more by participating on this forum.

mo 1826, first off, welcome to the site. You are welcome here, post often, don't be a stranger.
That is a nice looking old double, is it French? I have a Manufrance Robust # 3 that I really like.
If you can post more photos of the bottom of the barrels and the action water table, our experts here can go to work and give you more info on the gun.
As to ammo, if you don't reload, like me, I suggest you try RST shells, in my opinion they are about the best 2 1/2 " shells you can buy, they are great people to deal with, and they have a great selection of 16 ga shells.
Again, welcome!

I'm partial to continental guns, but some are a bit gaudy. This one has character, without being over done! A nice gift indeed! |

French guns can be excellent and are often undervalued. That's a solid looking gun by a known maker. RST is a great choice and so is Polywad for low pressure and 2.5" shells. I use both.
A nice entry for your first post. Welcome aboard. Gil |

For whatever reason, and I haven't heard or recall a reason, we just don't see many French guns in the US compared with those from the UK or rest of the continent. Manufrance made a ton of good guns and only a few seem to trickle over here. The Ideal is a classic made by Manufrance and is highly desirable, but only a few show up at the usual online vendors at prices considerably costlier than they would cost in France. Gil |

Verney Carron are very nice double rifles!
The Chapuis aren't bad either.
It should be a sweet handling shotgun. |

Gil,
Parity between the dollar and the Euro is a bit recent. I looked into getting used guns, here, back when I was doing that, and there was simply no way to pull it off. Really good guns, a decade ago, sold for more in France, and Europe, than they would here in the States.
Remember, in Europe it is only the rich that hunt.
I looked at a non ejector Ideal on the page you put up, it was listed for 800 Euro. That is about what it would sell for, here. Notice I said "sell" not "list" on an auction site, with a starting bid of $1899, for a decade, or two.
Best,
Ted |
