Weren't you the one who advised grinding off a chunk of the wad guide in order to use the DR16 on the 9000? So that didn't work out to your satisfaction? Now we're supposed to throw the guide away entirely and prep the hull with a stick?

All I had to do was use a Hornady wad guide in the Texan wad guide holder Smile

oohhh guys , drink a cool drink !! Rgls are tough little buggers and the fact they all are JUST a LITTLE different makes them interesting ! Even when you think you've got them down pat , they mess with you a little . I've grown accustomed to hand feeding those and all my 410's . Takes me a week to load a flat , but like Mikey sez , they are ALL 100 per cent good to go . There is no guide in my 410 . There is a washer on top of the platform on the 16 and it is only used for Feds . My BP has been acceptable for a while now !

Uh well......the "chunk" out of the wad guide had nothing to do with getting the wad inserted into the hull......it was filed to be able to get the wad into the wad guide while leaving the rammer tube in position to seat the wad firmly on the powder.

Not sure that I would iron every hull mouth, but I get Mike's point. It is obvious that Mike found a better way, for his needs, to reload RGL's. Not sure we need to get all grumpy over a $5.00 wad guide. If you don't like his suggestion, don't follow it.

I was also in on the idea to file the top lip of the wad guide, the wad guide on my 9000G still has the filed out "chunk" to insert the wad easier. Are you pi**ed at me too?

My dad made me a tapered smooth plumb bob type bit for my cordless drill. I put it on high speed and iron out a couple hundred pretty quick usually work on a bucket of 500 at a time then run them through the press. I only use the RGL's for 3/4 oz so a few thousand a year are fine. Once the bit is hot it opens them up in a second. I don't like extra steps when loading but like Mr. Campbell I really try to avoid hiccups on my 9000g in the end the smooth loading cycle is worth it. I have my ram tube set high enough that I can slip the DR16 wad in with no alterations but it requires a little 2 step dance. My Win CF's load the smoothest then the Herter's lastly the RGL's they need the extra attention.

I use my lee load all my RGL hulls, I open up the crimp by carefully shoving the hull onto the prime station rod on my mec 600, give it a quick twist and no problems with wad hangups. also gives me a chance to weed out used up hulls with cracked crimps.

Okay, now that bird season is over and I am home again I will try to figure out the pic thing. I may need to resurrect my old photo bucket account since the dropbox account did not jive with what I attempted before heading to New Mexico.
Someone asked which loader, I am dealing with Mec 650's but have experienced the problem with 600 Jr's as well. The fix I describe of using a spring to pull the wad guide down into the case mouth applies to the 650 and any other model that uses the round rod for the guide to clamp onto.

GEEZ LOOEEZ GUYS!!! Might I suggest you all try the Irish engineering method. Why not go out and get a bigger hammer, then apply it to the offending hulls to your hearts' content. It's a great outlet for the frustration and pent up energy from lying around the shanty too long through the winter months.

Think of it as therapy. Works for me. Might for you. A liberal application of Irish whiskey helps too. Laughing

I stumbled across this the past weekend as I was setting up my new 9000 16ga. and IMO it is simple but brilliant, thank you! The DR16 is much like the DR XXL 7/8 pink (and you think the DR16 is bright colored?!) 12 ga. in that it is very tall and I had to file and grind a notch in the side of the wad guide to feed them on the 12, with as mentioned previously the same 2 step dance. Wasn't looking forward to doing the same on the 16, and this works perfectly. First couple of handle pulls felt naked without the wad guide, didn't take long before I don't miss it.

As I was making room in the reloading room for the new 9000 I ran across something that took me a minute to remember what it was, been more than 10 years since I've used it. It is the BPI Spin Doctor, at one time as my hulls got rough crimps I would use it to open the mouths back up and it helped me get another load or 2 out of crispy shells. I used to do a flat or so at a time while watching the news at night until the weather came on. Going to see some use again now.



I checked and BPI and Midway still sell it.

and now for something completely different.

I made a small insert that is easily pushed into the case mouth. the out side dia is exactly the internal demention of a new hull, then put the hull upside down in a mec supersizer. One stroke and its ready. SO' Place plug in case mouth Size brass size case mouth pull plug. How easy can it get.
