What fun, yes VINTAGE ammo
Thank you for sharing!!
What will you do with them?

I curse the day that the 16 was not included as one of the skeet gauges. Our row to hoe wouldn't be nearly as lonely. |

outstanding find, I love that kind of thing! My oldest 16ga boxes are from the 90s, too recent to be neat yet. But I do have some nice 28ga boxes and shells from the 50s.
I'd be putting those up on little display shelves in my office, instead of crystal doo-dads or art pieces. Like how TGIFridays and Applebees and Red Lobster buy up period knick-knacks and put it all over the walls. Or "country kitchens" have all that wooden cutout stuff hanging around.
Maybe a nice display of a mounted pheasant, and then have a few of those boxes sitting on the shelf near him. And an old crumpled up hat your Grandpa wore hunting. |

I was thinking of saying I was going to try the #4s on turkeys this weekend and maybe take the #9s to the skeet field. They will go on display somewhere around the house. Have a nice display case that I need to work on a theme.
I'm resisting the urge to open the boxes just to look at the shells. Afraid I might tear the box and ruin them.
A guy had them at the North Carolina Gun Collectors Association show over the weekend. They were marked $30, but he was selling everything for 1/2 off, so I got them both for $30. He had other boxes, but I was low on cash. He wouldn't take checks or credit cards and there was no ATM nearby. Maybe I'll cross paths with him again. Should have asked for a card or where his shop was if he had one. Of course I think of these things after we were almost back home! |

^^^What Mike said. Open carefully. Collectors have told me that they want the boxes, not so much the ammo, and in as high a condition as can be had. I just think stuff like that looks cool sitting on the shelf over my loading bench. I'm an accumulator, not a collector. |

Just curious, does 2 1/2 drams equiv. connote anything meaningful whatsoever? Or is it more like the wee dram of good single malt whisky, as compared to a snootfull? |

It's a shorthand for velocity in a particular gauge with a particular payload. In the 16, it means 1 oz of shot at 1165 fps. Supposedly, 2-1/2 dr of black powder was required to propel 1 oz of shot to that velocity. I notice some manufacturers, e.g., Remington, now only list the velocity and have dropped the black powder reference. |

Collectors would probably hate me. That's okay, they are the reason fine old American doubles are so hard to afford so I feel no remorse!
I was given a variety of old shotshell boxes in various gauges a great many moons ago and I still use them for my reloads. I love picking an old box out and removing shells from it at the start of a hunt. I use old guns, I might as well use old boxes too. |

I know I could sell mine, but it makes me feel warm inside to actually use the ones I do have. |
