I was given some new 16 ga 2 3/4" primed S&W Hulls. Red in color with a high brass base. They have a separate base wad off molded plastic?.
Any one out there have any reloading experience with this hull or data to share.
Thanks Phil Havens |

Hello
I am in the process of loading 1200 virgin 20 gauge S&W hulls, they are in ALCAN boxes !!
They should load just like Federal hulls.
Will you 6 point crimp?

Interesting . . . I have almost 1000 S&W new primed 16's, and they are dark blue with silver colored high bases, and a wound paper base wad inside. They load like Federals. They are very old -- from my dad's stuff. I think mine are from the late '60's early '70's. The primers still work great as far as I know -- never had a misfire with one of them.

The 4th and 5th from the left are those S&W hulls, one roll crimped and one pie crimped. Here's a look at some others that are pie crimped. They are not the best. I have some I trimmed to 2 9/16 inch, and they crimped great, but I have no pics on hand right now.

Try comparing one of your S&W hulls w/ a Cheddite or Winchester/Cheddite hull. Split the two hulls in half lengthwise and remove one side at the metal (save both split hulls for later comparisons w/ other similar hulls). If the hull walls have about the same thickness and taper and the plastic base wads are a near match, then you will have your answer. |

+1 on 16gaugeguy"s advice. I bet dollars to doughnuts your red S&W's are Cheddites anyway. I think my old blue hulls were also made by Cheddite long ago, not long enough for AmericanMeet, of course , but long enough to have been a superseded construction, with their wound paper basewads and all. Let us know what you find Shooter68, as your red S&W hulls are apparently a new one on us.
Cheers! |

Wow -- I just noticed the box for those Alcan 20 ga empties says S&W-Fiocchi. Are all these S&W hulls actually Fiocchi's??
One drink and I'm "emoticon crazy"!! Can I use them all?? |

Yes and load like Federals
Within 2% of the Volume of Federals and larger so safety is built in.
BUT the Federal hull is a bit shorter.

Comparison of 20ga hulls:
Part # Mfg. Gauge Length Specs Primer Volume*
#0622070 Federal 20ga 2.653 yellow/skived Fed 209A 1195
#1392070 Cheddite 20ga 2.724 yellow/skived Ched-209 1238
#0642020 Fiocchi 20ga 2.724 yellow/skived Fiocchi 616 1219
#RIO207016 Rio 20ga 2.734 yellow/skived Rio 209 1232
*Volume is determined by grains of #7-1/2 lead shot that fit into the hull. |

The S&W ammo was loaded by Alcan. If you go back far enough in the Lyman manuals, you will find data for reloads. In the card and fiber days, they were considered the same as Federals for reloading purposes.
Recently, I found some very new-looking vintage S&W hulls on a local range. Every case had split around the perimeter of the rim. I have noticed the same thing with some Federal brass heads I have fired. Those rounds are getting on to 45 plus years in age. I think the metal has begun to fatigue. I'm not saying that's a particularly dangerous situation, but these old hulls might be one and out. This will really be obvious if they are fired in a gun with the head space a little on the loose side. |

Thanks all you shooters. Lots of good tips. They are straight walled hulls, so maybe like a Federal. Phil Havens (Shooter 6 |

AND when you reload the hulls,
consider a Fiocchi primer (Euro) |

Phil, please be advised. Federal polyformed hulls have a rolled paper base wad. Although hull capacity might be similar, a hull w/ a rolled paper base wad will almost always generate lower average peak pressures. I suggest you compare the S&W hull with a Cheddite/Winchester polyformed hull as advised and use data designed for Cheddite hulls if the two are closely similar. |
