Howdy everybody, first post. Has anybody ever tried cotton as a filler under shot? Asked this over on shotgun World also. Always looking for easy/cheap but good and safe. Never mind, just tried it . To fluffy, dumb idea. |

Hello Ohio Wirehair
Welcome on your first posting
Cotton fiber is too fluffy. As you said
Cheap is Cheerios (Breakfast cereal)
Best is a proper fitting wad, BUT I am often GIVEN wads that hold too
much shot for my wimpy skeet ammo, so I make do with a cheerio filler.

Sure is a lot of room in a Federal hull when using a light (13/16oz.) load and a CB10016 wad. Eventually gonna get 7/8 oz. wads but for now it is what it is. 19 grains Universal Win 209. is what I'm using. Pretty pleasant to shoot but a tad dirty. Makes a just right spreader load with a over shot card added. The spreaders pattern great at 10 yards. and the regulars are good at 30. Very light recoil. Been using Cheerios but was brainstorming. Gonna try a foam undershot wad next. |

Cheerios are cheap but Styrofoam meat trays are free. Using a 5/8" hollow punch gets a few hundred from one tray. |

Hello
I personally have been using 5/8" and 3/4" foam backer rod found at most hardware stores or online for over 30yrs. I just cut it with a scissors to the thickness I need also works great under the wad to keep powder from migrating.
I know the elites will say it is not tested or safe. I shoot thousands of rounds. a yr. for trap and hunting Use at your own risk or pay to have them tested for peace of mind

Ohio Wirehair, I suggest you read the post I submitted on the 7/8 ounce loads subject a few minutes ago. I offered some info about filler wads you might find useful. Hope it helps you out. good luck. |
