got in a bunch of once fired rem black hulls and decided to track how many times I can reload them. I loaded up a box with 19grs of universal, win 209 primer, claybuster cb100-16 wad, and 1 oz of #8 shot
reloads 1-3 no cracks in the crimp
reload 4 cracks just starting at the end
reload 5 cracks half way from the end to the rim of the crimp. still good crimps, no shot falling out, but would only use for practice rounds.
reload 6 pending |

I think people give up on RGL's way too fast. I have some that have been loaded up to 10 times. They can look awful, ragged, cracked, crisp, but they still crimp tight. Good enough for practicing. Once the crack gets below the fold line I toss them. i'll take all the RGL's people want to send my way! |

My solution to ragged crimps is an over shot card.
I use either a paper card or a plastic card cut from a heavy mil plastic transperancy (i saved a pile off old powerpoint slides years ago from when we used to use overheads).
The other solution is to cut off the fold crimp and roll crimp them |

Seems like cold weather is the killer of this hull.I'm not ashamed to load a hull 'till it's time-not scared of an ugly crimp. Also a user of overshot wads for that "one last time" |

The RGL hulls made about a decade or more ago do last longer then the brand new ones. My older once fired RGL hulls last from 3 to 5 reloadings on average before the mouths are too ragged to fold crimp. The mouths on my much newer ones often split on the first firing and aren't worth saving past three loadings if I'm lucky. Most are junk after two times.
It's the plastic used to make the hull tubes. The newest stuff is garbage. |

I'm glad others enjoy RGL hulls. I consider them the work of Satan. After 1 reloading I had to open up the case mouths to use them again. Bought the cone shaped spinner thingy from BPI and all it did was waste my time. Mine were junk after 2 or 3 loads. If some of you can make them work well for 8 reloads my hats off to you. Are these the modern replacement for the vaunted AACF?
Happy to NOT be using RGLs,
Jeff |

I find after 2 to 3 loading they are getting brittle with cracks and yes they need to be opened up before reloading. I use a brass plumb bob (Menards 6 bucks)and warm up the crimp with a hair dryer before opening it up. That helps a bunch. I'm also finding that they look good when I put them in the box but tend to open up a bit if they set a few weeks. I also have about a dozen old 8 point crimp Remington Peters hulls that I've loaded 6 times with no adverse affects, they look as good as the first time. So I've got to agree the old ones are much better, wish I had a couple thousand. |

RGL's are a doctor Jeckel , Mr Hyde type of thing . The factory loads look/load SO nice . The they turn into the ugly Bill !!... JNW - all they are is a fat Chedd . However , they do resist fire forming better than some Chedds . It's the extra padding ! |

They do if they try to load RGLs on a progressive reloader. |

Hahaha! I knew you'd respond.
These are a stash of older 8-pont crimp hulls with a copper colored brass that I thought I'd try out.
I do think the ones that last so long for me are older hulls. Good thing I only have a lot of them!
Oddly, I'm struggling with the Herters Chedittes. My crimps look like crap on them! |

Wow Dave! Old copper-headed 8-pointers! You don't see them much anymore. I can't remember - did those come originally with 209-size primers? The last of those black copper-heads I had were in 12 gauge. |

Yes, they are 209s. I didn't know for sure until this morning when I decided to load up 3 boxes of nickel 7's for my newly choke-opened Merkel. I came into a large stash of RGL's a couple summers ago. Must have about 4-500 or these, another 500+ green Express hulls, and a couple thousand older black 6-point hulls. Between The RGL's, a mountain of Federals, and a growing pile of Herters I think I'm set for life. |
