I have a lot of the herter's 16 hulls from cabela's. Any reliable info or experience loading these hulls would be appreciated...I had someone tell me they think it is a cheddite hull and only use chedite primer's in them...figures as I just bought 3k Winchester 209 hulls...any help would be appreciated |

Yes, they are Cheddite hulls. I reload mine with Win 209 and Fed 209A with no problems. Join the Yahoo 16 ga reloading group for lots of data. Also some on Hodgdon and Alliant sites. Lots of data right here if you do a search.

I reload them with 3/4 & 7/8 oz & W209's and DR-16's using International pwder with data from the Hogdon website. It appears I can get about 4 -5 reloads on them. |

I use CB0078-16 wads, Fiocchi 616 Primers, Universal powder, and one ounce of shot. They crimp and shoot like new shells. I reload on a PW375. |

I have loaded some. They are decent, and I get 3-4 loadings and then the crimps have a lot of splits. I use Win 209s. |

Should be a sticky. Herters are cheddite.
Or any other hull with the five stars around the face of the hull. No? |

I am going to change my previous position on these Herters hulls.
I had a box of once fired, and just went to load up some steel shot in them.
The plastic crimp area LOOKS ok, until you try to pre-crimp it, and then you get splits. Light pre-crimp too.
I was attempting to load up 8 shells to send off for testing, easy fit with shot at perfect level, and of course I was hand picking all the hulls for this test run very carefully--they all looked good before loading. However, I had to load up 15 shells to get 8 of them where one petal of the crimp didn't split and "overlap" another during final crimp.
They'd be fine for 1oz of lead, shooting dove-- I don't mind a wierd petal here and there if the crimp otherwise looks ok. But no good for testing. Thin and brittle up there. |

I recall that Vectan A-1 (green flakes ) is used to load the 1oz factory 16ga ammo. It is a fast powder. Slower powders will cook the case mouth causing it to become brittle. I use the once fired Herters for cutting to 2.5" for use in my Browning Automatic Shotgun . The A-1 works the action with an ounce of shot just fine. |

Been loading them for quite awhile with no problems. Chedite primers are way cheaper than Winchester primers. I'm using 18grs GD, SG 16 wad, 1oz 1185fps with good results. |
