Canvasback, Steve Voss, and Wingshooter in the Nebraska Sandhills: my two Ideals (James' form 6 did not come through in time, so he borrowed one of mine) and Steve's Grulla, with Cocoa, who helped bring a number of birds to bag:

Great pictures! Beautiful sunset. Any other opportunities besides Sharpies in that part of Nebraska? |

Pheasant opens next week. Not real plentiful here, but they can be found.

Our fave is 7/8 of 7's in the right barrel, 1 oz of 6's in the left. The shots are often a little on the long side, so a little choke (.005 and .015) is usually in order.

Fine pics, guys. Pretty bird country.
Has there already been enough frost there to kill the vegetation like that, or is it just dead from maturity or drought, or something?

Great trip & pictures.
#6 shot did a fine job on the Sharptail while I was West.
The 1148 trunk gun with a sling & I.C. choke worked well on longer shots. |

Stan, very little frost yet. Some in low lying areas but it's been unseasonably warm. Hit a high of 80 yesterday. Almost too warm to hunt for this Canadian. Pretty sure that the vegetation is brown from maturity. Only green we are seeing is yucca and prickly pear. |

Your great pictures bought back many happy memories of the sand hills; backpacking the snake river canyon, canoeing the niobrara river, rafting the dismal river, and camping in Halsey national forest. The sand hills are such a unique and beautiful area. Thank you. |

You are from Georgia, you never see this do you? Well, this is just the way the prairie looks this time of year. It is green in the spring, then hangs in as best it can through the summer. This is fall, grass goes dormant, the nights are getting cold.
Ma nature is getting ready for the long winter snooze, I have seen it for 74 years now.
Just a different country 1,000 miles north!

In this country, it is largely jump shooting; the usual tactic is to stay along the military crest of a range, then pop up over a bowl, depression, or slope and put them up. Cocoa was invaluable in finding birds after the shot, not before. She did a great job of staying close to Dad, and running down those with a broken wing or those that went into a plum thicket. James can speak to hunting sharpies in other habitat, as my experience in other venues is limited.
Will put up tonight a few more of the pics that I have, with more to follow after I get some much needed sleep.
Mike
Birds that she has to chase down often get a lot of feathers in the mouth, which she doesn't particularly care for
