It's not about all the shot being in the wad , it's about the 1 1/8oz load fitting in the hull .

Thanks. |

UncleDanFan,
VP80 is used because 1 1/8 oz ITX it will not fit in Z16 or SP16 wads. Light ITX loads might be fine in Z16.

Is it that important for the wad to enclose all of the shot? I thought shot scrubbing and deformation wasn't much of an issue since itx is harder than lead, but still softer than barrel steel. But, I'm certainly no expert on all of that.

With any type of Tungsten shot no matter what anybody claims use a wad that will contain the entire shot charge, it's your gun not theirs and they don't care if you scratch/scuff your barrel.
Get the idea of using lead shot wads with Tungsten based shot out of your head and you'll be fine, with Bismuth yes they are fine not Tungsten shot. |

Let me know if this sounds reasonable to send in for testing.
Federal hull
CCI 209
24 grains of steel
Vp80 w/ appropriate spacers
437gr of ITX 10 #4
It is crazy to think this will yield 1300-1350 fps
I'm basing this off of 26.5 gr for 7/8 steel = 1450fps
And fn16ga results where 21gr for 11/8 itx = 1150fps |

All,
BPI has recently developed and tested, at my request, a new 1 1/8 oz ITX-10 #4 load for 16ga using Steel powder.
Independent verification testing of this load is pending.
BPI has requested that the load data be shared on an individual basis only, with no posting on forums. PM me if you are interested in the data for this load. |

Think you may come up a bit short on that one velocity wise and it may be a bit inconsistent. You really can't use the 21.5 grain tested load as that was with the Cheddite hulls, they maxed out for me pressure wise with 1 oz of Steel shot and 24 grains of STEEL powder, with the Federal hulls and the Winchesters 209 primer I was able to use up to 28 grains of STEEL with 1 oz but the load was inconsistent.
If anything I would try the 24 grains of STEEL powder if you want and use the CCI 209M primer not the 209. I'm estimating with a primer like the Winchester 209 you should get by with 25 -26 grains of STEEL with 1 oz of ITX. |

Got a Call from Tom , my last test on this load and Steel Powder.
Hull : 16ga Federal 2 3/4” – Once Fired
Primer : CCI 209 Magnum
Powder: Alliant Steel 22.0 grains
Wad : PT-1680 (VP80) 4 Slits with (1) BPI 1/8” 20ga cork in cup
Shot: ITX10 #4 1 1/8 oz
Crimp 6 Fold .055 deep
5 shots
1196 FPS EV 8 11140 psi EV 300
Nice and consistent , will work fine for my needs .
Next spring I may try to put something together using Lilgun to get more velocity .
16GAwaterfowler thanks for the tip on using the CCI mag primer . |

That's pretty good with 1 1/8 oz.
CCI 209M has been my go to primer for a lot of 16 gauge non toxic applications, think it may have been Ben A. from Alliant who suggested using it to me. Milder than Federal 209A , but gives very good consistency with powders like STEEL.
Glad it worked for you. |
