Has anyone bothered to compute the cost of reloads recently?? To lazy myself but I'm curious.

Thanks

Joe

Cheap, cheaper ,cheapest is around $6.75 . The Herters with free ship is a close second.

I pretty much only load non-tox hunting loads and they are way cheaper than I can buy off the shelf loads for.

Here is a link to a cost calculator.

I can do 1 oz 16 gauge, with reclaim shot for around $4 a box.

I really enjoy reloading and the satisfaction of hunting and target shooting with the ammo that I made. I shoot five gauges and load for four of them (not the 410). Its extremely rare that I shoot any factory ammo, except a partial box of non toxic at waterfowl every year or so. Having said that, I did recently buy two flats of Herter's 16 ga. 1 ounce of #8. The price was good and more importantly, I needed the hulls.
In terms of cost, I suspect that that I save money on all the 28 ga that I load, and I save on the hunting loads in 20, 16, and 12 ga. The light target loads could be bought at a similar cost to my reloading costs.

You get out what you put in. Top of the line 12 gauge hunting ammo goes for about $15.00-$20.00 a box. I can beat that all day and load my favorite nickle plated 5 1/2's which I can't buy off the shelf in any case. Plus I get to pick the velocity and pressures that I want. If you go for the cheapest #5 shot hunting loads you can find, they are probably the Cabela's Herters line that is going for about $79.00 a flat. $7.90 a box plus tax is a good price, but I have much more confidence in the reloads I put together.

Hard for me to calculate a cost per box. I've been reloading since the '70's and have amoratized alot of the reloaders and wads etc. a long time ago. Whatever my cost, I'm sure it beats the top line shells and probably beats the lowest cost ones, even using my better components.

Primer $.037
Powder $.071
Wad $.027
Shot $.10
Total $.235

New Hull $.14

Total $.375

This is based on Current prices from PRI for New Cheddite hulls, WW Primers, Claybuster wads & local store for Green dot (using 16.6 gr) and lead shot at $40/25 lb (using 1 oz loads)

So a box of 25 using all new components would total $9.38
With reused hulls $5.88

I only group buy my components and therefore get them about as inexpensively as possible, though still a lot more than in the old days. With that being said, I can load a box for slightly less than Estates or Herders on Sale, but that is with 1 1/8 ounces of shot and no. 9s, a combination I can not buy. So even if it was only break even, I would still load 16s. I also want to at least think that my reloads would be more consistent that mass produced factory loads and I only use Magnum shot with a reasonably good antimony percentage.

I have hoarded primers, powder, and wads for years.
I use home-made shot.
I have hulls in abundance.
BUT I shoot over 200 shells a week and when all the stuff is used up, I will most likely buy the Herter's ammo or something like that.
I load my own and use only 7/8 ounce for 12 gauge,
and even lower for the BEST gauge Smile
So, my reloading is cheap at the moment but can sky rocket in the next decade Shocked
But as I am very close to 68, things might change
Mike

About the same here w/target stuff, no comparison regarding hand loaded hunting ammo.

That's about it, if you've looked a the cost of 16 ga ammo it keeps rising unless you get the El Ceapo Herters loads.
Performance is the basic issue for me anymore, I can't find 1400 -1500 fps lead 16 ga ammo but I can reload it quite easily. Makes a world of difference in the field with hunting loads.

Hey Mike, I will be 68 in less than two weeks so I know the felling. I load all 5 gauges (no 10s) and enjoy it, so as long as I get good or better loads, the way I want them, for break even or less, I am happy. I have barrels of 16 gauge Remington Game Hulls that load just like Gun Clubs and STS. Was getting those shells in 1 oz. 8s for $65.00 a flat total, but no more.

I'm a long time hoarder myself (and am also past the 68 year mark). I used to think my hoarding might have been a character flaw. Now I think I might be a bit pre-scient. Laughing

But truth be told, all the savvy 16 ga. folks I know also reload. Why? Because all to often, it's the only way we can get the loads we want for the purposes we want to use them for.

My favorite and most often used 16 ga. load is my 3/4 ounce target and light game bird load. Try buying a box of 3/4 ounce fun and games loads for the 16. You'll be looking a long time I'll wager.

Another of my favorites is the 1-1/4 ounce baby mag load for longer ranges under tough conditions. Federal still markets one (but for how long?). Last time I looked, the price for a box of 25 was around $25. I can load a 25 count box of comparably performing loads for under $6. Why should I buy them if I can roll my own? Momma raised no fools. Very Happy
